'00 Pathfinder Rear Differential Noise

This is my first post here since my wife usually drives the Pathfinder (I usually post on a Lexus forum for things related to my car). Anyway.....

I was driving her pathfinder on my way to Home Depot the other day when I noticed a noise coming from the rear end. It is sort of a cyclical whirring noise that is very pronounced during sharp turns at low speeds. I don't hear it when going straight (fast or slow), or turning at higher speeds. I noticed it mainly as I was turning into the parking lot and then into a parking space. It makes this noise in Drive and Reverse.

The truck is a '00 Pathfinder LE 4x4 with a 3.3 engine and (I think) the LSD on the rear end. Because I only hear it when turning I was thinking it may be something in the rear differential, but as of yet I have not been able to pinpoint the problem. The last thing I want to happen is for the diff to give out on the highway with my wife and daughter in the truck.

Any ideas?

Welcome to the board!

In my experience, the failure mode for an LSD is excessive noise when turning...but more of a grinding or clucking sound. In either case, it absolutely couldn't hurt for you to drain the oil out and put in a fresh fill of diff lube (check your owner's manual for the exact weight), and visit your Nissan dealer for some LSD additive. If you bought the vehicle used, it's possible the differential was drained and not filled with the additive. If you bought it new, perhaps enough oil has leaked out to cause a noise, or perhaps the additive has expired. In either case, it won't cost more than 20 bucks (or so) to do a drain/refill on it, and it might solve the problem. If not, you may need to have a mechanic take a closer look at it.

Good luck,

Unhappy 01 pathfinder shaking at speeds above 55mph

My 01 pathfinder recently started vibrating loudly when i accelerated above 55mph. A mechanic at Meineke says its likely the rear differential & drive stick are bad and need to be replaced...Is this the only cause of the noise? They want to charge me over $800 for both parts (used) and $500 for the labor. Could the problem be anything besides the the rear differential? Someone else says maybe it just needs a wheel balance...that sounds like too simple a solution but i want 2 consider all my options b4 i shell out that kinda cash. I dont want to find out after the fact that it wasnt a necessary repair and that the mechanic was "guessing" at my expense...I dont know the mechanic so Im skeptical that im not being played. Any advice?
