Another EGR Valve Question

Well, thanks to a lot of reading here and advice from you folks, I have determined that the EGR valve on my '00 Frontier is bad. First, from the engine codes and then I pulled and plugged the vacuum line the truck ran like a champ.

But I still have a couple of questions.

1. Is the EGR valve on a 2.4L the same for a '00 as a '99 or '98? I might be able to find one on a junked truck for some low $$ (this truck has some very high miles - so I want to limit how much $$ I want to spend).

2. The dealer can get me one, but it will take about a week. Can I run this thing - to get to work and back, and my question is - will it hurt anything to run the truck with the EGR' vacuum line plugged? BTW, my round trip is 120 miles per day - which explains the high mileage!

3. Any tips on getting this EGR valve off - the bolts look right rusty.

4. I read that sometimes you can pull the EGR and clean it (carbon?) and it will continue to work OK - but for how long? Anyone done this?

Thanks much!
Bill

About EGR valves

Bill, this is from my recent experience. My 1989 Nissan pickup D21 had a bad EGR valve where the simptoms were hesitation, stalling, power loss, etc (would idle ok but would choke when I gave it gas). I unplugged the thing until I was able to get a new via an internet supplier (less than $100) and it ran ok. As long as you are not about to have the car inspected for emmisions you should be ok until the new part arrives.

98 thru 2000 all have the same 4 cyc engine...EGR valve from any of those will fit...

However...

Why mess with getting a used EGR valve from a junker...possibility is pretty good that valve will be bad also...

You can drive it, see what you can do in the inet...

Good luck
Steve
