Smile locate sensors on 87 z24i

Hi all!

I have spent many hours here and thank all of you for getting me this far! First a little history - I bought an 87 hardbody - 4cyl, 5 speed, z241 with 178k. Great fun to drive! I changed the starter, 2 new coils, plugs and a battery. Took it to inspection and passed emissions but failed for something unrelated. I fixed the other problem -1 day late -and had to get totally reinspected. All of a sudden, my idle was racing out of control. They couldn't reinspect the truck.
A friend used a plastic tie to calm down the idle just enough to get to inspection. The young butthead at DMV flooded the truck when it was bucking - he didn't have the sense to back off the accellerator. They pushed it out and I waited forever for it to start again.

One more time I go back and they failed me for Co2. I read some of the haynes manual at the auto parts store - pics and diagrams were not helpful. Came home a spent hours reading your posts and discovered how to use the ECU. My ECU gave me codes 11 and 13. I read in one post that the Crank Angle Sensor is under the rotor. (Don't you know I changed the cap and rotor before I used the ECU!) So is it hard to change this sensor? What should I look out for?

The Engine Coolant Sensor is the other mystery. Where is that located? What should I look out for when changing it?

Can anyone share what they paid for these parts? Any brands to steer clear of?

Finally, the truck "bucks" and is dieseling. I have read many posts regarding these problems. Any additional thoughts?

Oh no! I think my friend put Bosch plugs in when I first bought it. :-(

And the unimportant ? is......this truck doesn't have a cigarette lighter - or much of anything else for that matter. I don't smoke but would like to charge my phone once in a while. Can I add one?

THank you all! I love my truck!

Perhaps you could try clearing the codes, driving a while, then rechecking current codes. This way old codes would be removed from consideration. The coolant temp sensor should be easy to find as it is normally mounted near the thermostat housing. Look for a sensor that enters the coolant passage. The Bosch plugs should be fine. I have run em in z24s and my current KA with no problems to date. The problems typically were in VG30s a(6 cyls) with +2 or +4 plugs. Good Luck

As far as your crank angle sensor goes, i dont believe it is changable. I think you have to change the whole distributor. Let me know if you find out otherwise as i have the same trouble code on my truck. And those bosch plugs lasted a whole 750 miles in my z24i!

Let me see if I can help a little, the racing idle is probably the thermo element (inside a housing on the front of the throttle body) you'll see some hoses going to it. For the bucking, I would be looking at the EGR valve, there are 2 coolant sensors, one for the gauge(spade connector) and one that feeds the ECU(it has an injector style connector,2 pin) as for the cap/rotor/plugs do yourself a favor and use the factory stuff, for some reason most Nissans do not like the aftermarket stuff, Oh, make sure the connections for the coolant sensors are clean and not damaged. This is some of the things I found with my 86.5 pu, hope some of this helps

thanks

Thanks to everyone for your replies! I found out the bad news about the distributor today. I think I have some grounding issues to solve also. I am going to work on it this weekend and will share the outcome by Monday.

Thanks again!
