I have a 2000 Nissan Frontier that has about 170,000 miles, however, recently it started hesitating above idle when I step on the gas. My check engine is on (it's ALWAYS on) and I checked the codes and they are pointing to the EGR valve.
My questions are:
How difficult is it for a back yard mechanic like me to replace this valve?
Also, when I call some of the parts stores, they are telling me that the EGR valve is not available yet - go see the Nissan dealer. The valve IS available for a 1999 and earlier. My question is - is the EGR valve for the 1999 going to be the same part number as the 2000? If it is, I can save a goodly $$$ over my dealer who wants $170 for the valve and gasket.
Any install advice, tips and tricks would be appreciated.

Bill, I don't have any advice on the valve itself, except to strongly advise you buy the OE part from Nissan. I've tried aftermarket EGR valves on two different vehicles before, and both times, they were "generic" ones that you adapted to your vehicle with washers and orifice restrictors, etc. I replaced the valve with an aftermarket one to get rid of an off-idle hesitation, much like you are experiencing. The problems got worse until I actually bought an OE valve (in this case, it was an AC-Delco valve for an Oldsmobile). I saved $40 by buying an aftermarket one, but more than spent that in time and frustration trying to figure out all the "new problems" caused by that valve -- and figuring out that the valve itself was never going to work right.
Make sure you try cleaning the carbon buildup from the existing valve, feeder tube, and intake port before spending $$ on parts. It's very possible that it's just clogged up with carbon.
