using 4x4

hey all,
i picked up a 2000 pathfinder 4x4 AT a couple of weeks ago, one question about it before it gets snowy
this is my first vehicle with a manual transfer case, my other car is a subaru and theres no turning that 4WD off...

what are the restrictions on going into 4HI from 2HI

the little card just says how to go between 4HI and 4LO (stop, push down, then go to 4L) which i havent tried because i put it into N (transfer case) and then it was grinding when i tried to go back into 4HI so i just shut off the truck and put it back in 2HI and left it there....

i know not to use 4x4 in the dry, don't worry
it'll go in like butter if i put the transmission in N when i'm stopped and just pull the shifter into 4x4... but i'm so paranoid about grinding gears i won't try it on the fly...

lil help? appreciated

I generally get the truck rolling in the driveway or the parking lot and slip it in 4HI well below 20MPH. If you start getting into speeds that fast or more it'll grind on you. You can slip it into 4HI from neutral with out any trouble but like I said a rolling start deosn't hurt the truck at all.

You should be able to go from 2Hi to 4Hi rolling, no problem. Just slide it down. Even when the truck is in drive, because with the full-time hubs, all the drivetrain components should be spinning at the same rate.

Going from 4Hi to 4Lo is different. You're changing the gear reduction (from 1:1 in the transfer case to somewhere north of 2:1). You should stop, put the transmission into Neutral, and then push down on the 4x4 lever and slide straight back. Then put the transmission back into Drive and go.
