Just wondering if anyone has used the Warn manual hubs to replace the stock automatic hubs on a 90's pathfinder. I found that the instructions that came with the hubs pretty lacking.
The hubs are installed, but the installation left me wondering if I am missing something. I removed the entire clutch assembly including the thrust plate and sized washer that seems to keep the shaft end play between .004 and .012". I couldn't get the Warn hub far enough onto the shaft even with just the snap ring, thrust washer/plate assy in place. So I bolted the hub on without any washers and used the snap ring on a groove that happened to be close enough to the inner gear on the new hub. Now the shaft end play is way past .012" and now the only thing thats preventing the shaft from dropping is a measley snap ring.
Does anyone have similar experience or advice they can share?
On a side note.. I've got a set of stock auto hubs that need new clutch assy's w/ the plastic covers for sale..
Thanks,
jason

As far as I know, you simply remove the auto hubs and everything else down to the bearing lock nut and washer, then put the Warn hub body on, pushing it on all the way so the large o-ring pops into place, then use your studs and nuts or bolts to bolt it on, then put the cap on and test for proper operation. Should be really simple. I suggest using Grade 5 or 8 cap head bolts rather than the studs and nuts because those studs break very easily and loosen up easily as well.
One thing to watch out for is that 86.5-90 Pathfinders have 28 spline front axles while 91-up models have 31-spline front axles that are a different diameter. Perhaps you got the wrong hubs in the first place? Also, watch for the studs loosening up on you after use.

The hubs are already on the truck and they are the right ones. The only thing I am worried about is the lack of a thrust washer between the snap ring and the inner gear and the excessive shaft end play..
I used permanent locktight and some double nut action to tighten the studs. They won't be loosening any time soon.

Jason,
I am not sure why you came up with extra parts on the swap. I installed Warn Premium Manual Hubs on my 95 XE 4x4. Like you said the instructions were vague but after my buddy and I put them on we were amazed at how easy the install was.
I didn't come up with any extra parts. I am worried about the lack of parts. The conversion requires you to strip off the pieces that keep the drive shaft axial play within spec. Didn't you wonder why there wasn't even some kind of thrust washer to put on before the snap ring on the end of the shaft?

The splined reciever inside the hub itself should keep axial axle play to a minimum, shouldn't it? Where's it gonna go? :/

I am just gonna let it go. I haven't talked to a single person who has shared the same concern. I guess if the snap ring on the end of the shaft eventually wears out from grinding against the splined receiver, the shaft will just drop when I'm making a sharp turn or zig zagging through some slop.
