OK so here's my story. I bought my Xterra about 2 monthes ago, it's a 2000, 3.3liter, 5 speed, 4X4. Anyways, I'm driving, and the guages die. Usually, though sometimes it can be different, the gas guage will stay where it is, the speedometer, tach, and temp guage all die, kinda like when the car is shut off. Sometimes they can stick. The gas guage never moves, but sometimes the tach will stay stuck where it is, or the speedometer will stay stuck. Anyways, took it to the dealership, couldn't duplicate the problem, so they didn't do anything. When I got the car back, I drove it around till they died again, and took it back. This time they found a loose wire going to the speedometer. Didn't fix the problem. I eventually noticed that it seems to happen when the headlights are on. So I tried driving the car with the headlights on, and the switch that controls the the brightness of the dashboard lights comeletely off. And the problems seems to not happen then. So I take it back to the dealership yet a third time. This time I tell them of my discovery, they checked it out, and there was a short in the dashboard light dimmer switch. So they replaced it. And of course, the problem still exsists. All together they have had my car for almost a month, and the total work they've done is, fixed a loose wire and replaced a switch, but never fixed the problem. It is uber annoying. Please, if anybody has any idea, I'm dieing here.
I have the same unsolved prob- xterra cluster failure
I have a 2000 xterra, and have a very simiar problem to where after driving for a while, mostly while the lights are on, almost all of the gauges in the instrument panel dont work, some freeze up. This goes away after turning the vehicle off and letting it cool down. i've asked around and no one knows. any luck??
I've also talked to Nissan dealers, and other garages, besides the one I work at (i'm a mechanic).... no luck so far.

Wow, sounds like you have a wiring mess.
I hate tracking down elusive wiring problems and I can't really offer much other than it sounds like you may have a bad ground or maybe even some wires shorting with each other. I had a vehicle with a gas gauge that would go from the correct setting to Full every time I stepped on the brake. Turned out the brake lights and the fuel sending unit were in the same harness and that harness had fallen onto the exhaust pipe. The insulation melted from several wires and the brake light wire and fuel sending unit wire were touching each other. Like I said, I think that kind of stuff is the biggest pain to try and track down. I'd start with the parts of the harnesses I could see and check for any damage. Good Luck.

Had the same problem with my 2000 Pathy. I'm not sure if they have the same instrument panel or not. What I ended up finding was a bad solder joint on the middle pin of a voltage regulator on the circuit board for the speedometer. It must regulate voltage for all of the guages. I re-soldered it and the problem is gone for now. Hopefully that is the end of it.
Has anyone else had this problem lately with their gauges all of a sudden quitting? Mine started doing it about two months ago and of course the dealership can't replicate the problem so they say there's nothing they can do about it. They treat me like I'm making it up. It seems to happen at night when the lights are on, the air/heat and the radio. The only way they come back on is to let the car cool off for awhile. The dealership told me I needed a new battery so I did that but the problem is still not taken care of. They say there's nothing they can do. Any ideas? Oh by the way it's a 2001 Xterra with only 41,100 miles on it! It makes me nervous to drive it!!!
