Timing Cover Leak

I have an oil leak on my 96 with 152000 miles and i took it up to kwik kar and the said that it is my front timing cover and they wanna charge me 200 dollars to fix it but the guy at auto zone said that it costs like 9 dollars for the part to fix it so should i just pay the 200 dollars to get it done right b/c they might replace the whole timing chain too or should i do it but myself im no mechanic but how hard is it to do?

What's with the timing chain thing? You spoke of Oil leak and nothing else?
If they threw in a timing chain replacement in the price.... JUMP ON IT. If it is
just the main crank seal, do it yourself.

Where is the leak? Is it leaking around the edge of the timing cover, meaning the timing cover seal is leaking, or is it the crankshaft seal, where the crankshaft comes through the timing cover? If the timing cover seal itself is bad, you're going to have to remove the whole timing cover, and you might as well replace the tensioner and guides and chain (and water pump) while you're in there. As spec240 said, if it's just the crank seal, that's relatively easy to replace and doesn't involve removing the cover.

The question is, which "seal and gasket"? The actual timing cover seal, or the crankshaft seal? It matters. The timing cover is the "cover" on the front of the engine. Behind your water pump, behind all the belts. It's probably a chore to get to. Depending on which gasket is actually bad, 200 bucks might not be a bad price. If they have to actually remove the timing cover to change the gasket (like, if the timing cover gasket is bad), $200 probably isn't bad for that work.

If they have to remove the timing chain cover to replace the gasket. They're probably saying " might as well put on a new timing chain as long as we have to go this far for just a gasket".
