1987, hardbody, 4Cyl, dashboard brake light does NOT turn off after you release the hand brake. Dashboard light is constantly ON. Brakes appear to be off but LED won't shut off. There is no noticeable heat from the rims after driving to lead me to believe that the brakes are still engaged. What mechanism controls the LED off/on after you release the hand brake?
The brake light is not just for the hand brake, but will also light up if there is trouble in the brake system itself. you migh want to check that out or get it checked out, before you hit your brakes one day and they are not there.

Look and see if the button under the dash is pressed in all the way. There should be a pin that sticks out of the top of the handbrake rod, right at the base of it. That should press the button down and turn off the light. If it's not touching then your light will stay on.
