Hey, guys well my dad has a 1986 nissan truck, on the engine itself it says Nissan Z, i really dont know much about his truck. The thing is that his truck has been acting up, it acts as if it were to be "dying," like not getting enough gas. He cleaned out the carburator and added one of those carb. cleaners on sunday and said that the truck seemed fine but it started to act up again. He changed the fuel pump like two years ago, and the guy that he bought it from said he had to change to fuel pump a couple of times, could this be it? And if so isnt that a problem having to change the fuel pump every two years? Can you give me any tips on helping him how to fix this problem.
has the fuel filter been replaced? maybe there is debris ( rust) in the fuel tank, has the truck been run real low on fuel? i don't think you should have to replace the fuel pump that often if at all in a vehicle that isn't really that old. 86 truck would be a 4 cylinder, has all the normal tune up stuff been done?

Thank you for your response, yes he has maintained all of the routine tune ups, he has also replaced the fuel filter, dont know how long ago but he told me that he had replaced it. What would the fact that there is rust in the atnk have to do with the truck acting the way it does? I assume he would have to completly change the whole tank out.
i was just thinking if there was rust in the tank maybe it's gettin sucked up into the throttlebody/carb? Even though there is a fuel filter sometimes the filter doesn't catch everything. was just a thought

Thanks for the info, I was just asking why the rust would cause such a problem, I didnt know why. Ill tell my dad to look into the rust thing and the fuel filter. But another thing i thought was wierd was that he's had to change the fuel pump once and the guy he bought it from changed it as well, is there something wrong with that, like something that could be causing the fuel pump to give out so quickly? Thanks once again ahardb0dy, for the input.
it's not unreasonable for the fuel pump to have just been bad, depending on if it was a new part or a rebuilt part the one that was installed by the previous owner may have just been defective, or even used who knows. aftermarket replacement parts aren't perfect bad ones do make it to the market for sale, way back when I had my 87 SE-V6 I went thru 3 starters in a week!!!, turned out the first 2 were local rebuilds it wasn't until my friend who owns the foreign auto parts store told me I could get a beck-arnley starter for a few dollars more that I got a good starter, wish he had told me that the first time!! I got real good at replacing my starter LOL, did you ever check to see if their were any diagnostic codes stored in the computer? if the computer picks up a problem it will retain it in it's memory until the key is turned 50 times or until the memory is cleared before the 50 times.
more specificall you said the truck seems like it's not getting enough fuel, what does it do exactly? does it bog down while driving? give me more details and I'll look it up in my factory service manual,

Well damn that has to suck about your starter, I had to replace my starter for my sentra and it cost me close to $200, but it lifetime warranty. And about the fuel pump, I asked my dad and he said that the previous owner replaced it three times and that he has replaced once, and he thinks it might be the problem, dont know? And about the computer thing I dont know if he has had it checked or if it has a CEL. But when my dad drives the truck its like if the wasnt in gear, its standard and he can put it in any gear and it wont move, well it moves but just moves back and forth a little a time. Its not a transmission problem cuz u can hear the gas moving and once the gas goes, the truck runs fine. It doesnt always do this but its doing it more frequently. I dont know quiet how to explain the problem, its like as if it where rocking back and forth???? (dont know if you can understand this)
