I purchased a 1988 Nissan Z-24 during the summer, and just as of late, it is idle-ing very roughly, and getting very poor gas mileage (about 13) when i normally got 18 when i first bought it... If anyone could suggest some tips or even replacement parts that would be great!
Getting this old, it's really hard to tell. If you have aready tuned it up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel and air filter) then I would suspect a coil. Has there been any work done recently that could cause this? Does your catalytic converter stink?

Check your EGR valve, or just get one at the local parts store and install it.
I went through the rough idle thing and my mileage went down to about 10 mpg. I first changed my fuel filters, but that didn't do it. I put on a new Weber, but that didn't do it. Finally I started looking at fuel lines and found some hairline cracks in the formed or moulded fuel lines near the tank.
Also, because rubber rots, check your vaccume lines. I couldn't figure out a good way to check the vaccume lines myself, because it's not like checking for leakage on a pressurized line with soap and water. I got new vaccume line and just started replacing it line by line. It's not that expensive, or hard to do.

Reason: Update
Also check 02 sensor that does have a big influence on those motors... Like aaronford said...check your cat. converter, if its pluged then the sluggish feel and bad gas mileage would come from that!

My 87 KC 4X4 had that problem at first then initially wouldn't run anymore. My problem was my throttle body wasn't getting the correct voltage. The TB should have been getting 4.5v on average, but I was only getting 2v. That's what the mechanic told me anyways. Took him about 4 days to figure it out.
I had the same problem with my 89'. I replaced everything, did a tune up checked everything except for MAF sensor, they are $400 Cdn at the dealer so I went to the wreckers and they had one from an 87'. My truck has been running great since then. It would be worth trying, and if not that try the TPS.

MAF on an 89 2.4??? Where would this be if I might ask?? to my knowledge those motors dont have a mass air flow sensor...the TPS, yeah that could cause it...also the air cleaner temperature sensor...try those also

If you are looking at the engine, it is in the right side of the throttle body. It is a little black box. The TPS is on the back of the throttle body. I know this because I talked to the dealership and thats what they told me what the problem was when I had it scanned, if not the MAFS they said it could be the TPS.
