The engine should not get any hotter in 4wd than in 2wd mode. In theory, there is more drag in 4wd, but the cooling system has the capacity to handle it, as evidenced by the needle staying in the normal position on your gauge.

This is normal. When in 4wd, all four wheels are locked into turning the same speed (assuming they all have traction). When you make a turn, the inside tires have to travel less distance than the outside tires. The differentials correct for this, and all would be normal. However, the front tires also have to travel a different distance (longer) than the rear tires, and there is no center differential...the transfer case locks the two axles together. So something has to give...and the front tires, while turning, usually scratch around for traction and you can usually perceive that as them skipping and sliding as you turn slowly.
