My 91 hard body makes a squealing sound when the wheel is turned all the way to one side or the other. it sounds like a belt but which belt is it. it does not make sounds when the wheel is not completely turned. also if it is a belt would it be better to just replace it then tighten it or should i not worry about it because it only makes sounds when the wheel is fully turned.

It's your power steering pump belt. Just tighten it up unless the belt has cracks all over it or otherwise appears worn.
ok thanks ill try that tomarrow (little dark right now)
Be Careful, If you over tighten the belt, it can ruin the pump.
Most belts will squell when they get old and are put at thier max. Which is what you are doing when you hit the edges of the pinion box.
To check the play on the belt, put a regular ruler at it and see how much you can move the belt up and down.
If you can move it more than 1/2 to 3/4", it needs to have tension to it. if it is at that point, then replace.
Just some info.
if your cranking the wheel to the point it cannot turn anymore its not the belt, your just jamming the wheels against the the stops and trying to turn when it can go no more. the noise is coming from the power steering system itself from the stress of overworking it in a way it will never go. any car with power steering will do the same thing giving a sqeeling sound that immitates a loose/worn/hardend belt almost. tightening the belt to the point it has no bouunce at all will only stress the belt to the point of eventually breakign or stretchign depending on the age/condition of it.
it is a common noise especially in vechiles with a fiew years uon them. my 91 and 93 both do it(both 4x4 93-stock work beater, 91 on 31's weekend runner). all of the work trucks where i am employed(1 ton gm's) and almost every car i come across with soem age does it. only cure i know of is mroe powerfull speakers and watch how far your spinnign the wheel around. lucas may make a treatment that may help quiet it a little. dont honestly know though, i know they make it for proably every other fluid in a car.
The noise isn't from in the steering system itself. The noise comes when you put a full load on the power steering pump, which requires a sudden increase in force to turn. The noise is the belt slipping on the pulley. This is less likely to happen with maintaned (recent) belts. And obviously, the better condition your steering system is in, the easier it's going to be to run it (less power required to turn the pulley on the pump). The best solution, if a new belt doesn't cure the problem, is to not hold the steering wheel at full lock.
the belts were replaced recently so i guess ill just have to not turn the wheel completly then. i only do it occasionaly neway when trying to park and do a u turn in my driveway so it shouldnt be a problem

not to disagree or start an argument but the pump is part of the power steering system, some cars the noise will come from the p/s box or p/s rack(depending on the car) it is not always the pump.
