Whatup PPL? I am buying a 93 Hardbody with a VG30E and a 5speed tranny for only 200 bucks. The truck has been totalled, but engine and many other parts are good. Here is my problem, I have a KA24E in my 93 auto that has 196,000 miles. I want to swap the VG30E into my truck. What all do I need and, where can i go to get it? BTW, the VG30E has only about 100,000 miles and has been well taken care of. Thanx in advance.
You're going to need the computer and possibly the wiring harness out of the donor truck. If you are going to use the 5 speed, just swap everything out from that such as the slave cylinder, clutch master cylinder, equalizer, clutch pedal and brackets etc. I don't know if the V6 will bolt up to your 4 cyl style automatic so, you may need a 6 cyl style automatic if you want to keep your truck as an automatic.
I plan on keeping it automatic, and just had my tranny replaced only a few months ago. It's a 4 speed with overdrive. If it is too much trouble, I have access to anouther lower milage KA24E. I just wanted some FREE extra HP. BTW, what is better engine for upgrades later down the road?
This is what I would do if I were you. Provided you can get the other KA24E at a reasonable price, I'd rebuild it before you install it or, check in your area for a reputable machine shop that knows the engine well and have them do a few performance mods to it such as shaving the head (increases compression) and possibly putting a more aggressive cam in it. That way you can still drive the truck on the original engine and then swap it out in a weekend plus it gives you ample time to gather all of the go-fast parts you want without having to shell out a bunch of money all at once. Just food for thought. Oh yeah, you could also sell your still running KA24E to recover some of your money.
The easiest way to do it, would be to buy the totalled car and find some place you can keep it, for possibly a long while. Then tear the engine out, very carefully. Disconnect the engine wiring harness and label everything. The tranny's probably aren't interchangeable, so you would probably be better off swapping out for the 5 speed. It would be better anyhow, because even the vg30e doesn't have a ton of power, and it is easier to get the power out of a weak engine with a manual tranny. To do the swap, you would need the wiring diagrams for both trucks. This way you can connect the engine wiring harness up correctly. It would not be a trivial task, but could be accomplished easily enough. Figure out how much time you think it would take and then double it because that is always how these things work out. But it can be fun and you can learn alot in the process.
the other KA24E has allready been upgraded with better pistons, cam, and head work, and other mods. It is supposedly ready for NOS or Turbo application. I thought that the VG30E would have better low end power and could have same mods done and end up with more power than KA24E. Time is not an issue. Money is however, LOL. I do plan on selling tons of not needed parts on eBay. Was told that I could get better "take off" power by changing gears in axel. Has anyone done this? And, where can I get a Posi kit?

Truthfully bud, if I were you, I'd just stick the already built KA24E in your truck and put the remainder of the money in a really nice paint job or a CD or something. I like my truck and all but, it was never meant to be a performance vehicle. When people ask me to race I tell them sure! We'll both put 1k pounds of bricks in our vehicles and head out to the track.
I hear ya, Warped, but I can't help my need for speed. Right now all I have is my lil' trucky truck. I can only try and make it faster than any other car I've had before. My last two cars were a 85' Regal with an turbo v6, and a 95' Neon that I never got to finnish. Truck was just a "get me 'round" car, but I fell in love with it. I will go with the KA24E, and add NOS to it. Still need help with the axel gear and POSI setup.
I dunno about putting a posi in a pickup man... That's just begging for fishtailing on wet curves and corners. I'd check into other options regarding the posi. As to swapping the gears to 4.10:1, you'd need to ask someone else. The last time I drag raced was back around 1985 and even then I didn't screw with the axle in the car.
found a POSI kit, and found better way to get low RPM power. Going to do a 240sx intake swap to get the power. I get better control with POSI than without it. Thanx for all the help!
i would have went lsd and the 240 intake mani, a 4-2-1 header and full exhuast, little more aggressive cam and if you have the money get a 3 angle valve job with bigger valves and a port and polish and if you want to dish out another 1 to 3 grand turbo ! and ur ballin with 250hp on stock internals from what i hear
