Question K&N Air Intake Questions.

Vehicle: 02 Frontier Crew Cab 4X2 LB XE V6 3.3L Non Super Charged
MODS already: Throtal Body spacer, K&N Drop in air filter, Magnaflow single I/O.

Question: If I decided to do a K&N Air Intake Mod to this engine, what kind of modifications would I have to do where the current air filter system is and for all the air sensors? If any one has pictures of theirs that they have done this to that would be most benificial and greatly appriciated.

Are you considering going to a warm or cold air intake? Be cautious with both, as neither will separate water from air as well as the stock air box will. The most important part is isolating the intake tract from possible water intrusion...and if you're doing a warm air intake (cone filter inside the engine compartment), to best isolate that from the hot underhood air, because you have just as much of a possibility to LOSE power as you do to GAIN it. You will, however, have the best chances of a good result, knowing that you already have other intake/exhaust modifications.

Good luck!

I was considering just putting in a coned shape filter in the engine compartment. I was going to put a shield under it to keep water and such away from it. I do not do much of any 4WDing or anything as the truck is a 4X2. What I was also looking for here was what to do with the MAF sensor and other air sensors that are tied into the stock air box.

Thanks for help.

Here are my experiences with putting a K&N cone filter on another car:

http://jadcock.oldsgmail.com/cadsls/filter.html

I believe your setup should be similar to mine there. There is an IAT sensor in the airbox, plus the MAF sensor that may or may not actually be mounted to the airbox. On the Cadillac, it's mounted right to the throttle body. Anyway, I relocated the IAT sensor to the intake tube and that worked fine I guess. Even with the heatshield, I did not like the results. If I were to do it again, I would install a drop-in filter...or make sure I could plumb it to outside air. That's a moot point on Caddies anyway, because dyno tests show little-to-no improvement, using a variety of cotton-gauze filter brands. Your Nissan may react differently though. Hopefully, you can get some ideas from what I did with mine.

I've found that mods are like medicines. Its effects (both good and bad) will tend to vary depending on who, or what, you apply them to.

You will have no trouble with the standard K&N system for the Frontier/Path/Murano/Exterra. etc. etc.
I have driven through water that my 4x bud's did not want to.
DRY as a ROCK. If you have the body plate up front, you have ABsolutely nothing to worry about.
I run the SLR Air system and it increased almost 12HP(17HP with the combo of the Gibson exhaust and SLR intake). I have yet to even get water close to the filter, unless I spill a drink while under the hood.
I have a Pic, yet I see no way to load it on this server.

In the pictures, where did you get the aluminum piece that attaches the air filter to the air intake hose? Was it part of a kit or did you get it seperate from some where else? Do you have a link to the place that you got it from? How much did you pay for it?

Thanks, Tan.
