Getting an 89 D21 hardbody... advice?

Hey, I'm no stranger to Nissan, owned 2 before and have been here for a while... but I never had a hardbody before. The one I'm picking up is an 89 V6 auto 4x4 with 101k on it. Any certain maintenance needed to be done or things to check out before putting some serious miles on it? Never had a VG30 engine of any type, so this brings a whole new bunch of things to learn into the picture...

Well, with that mileage, I'd replace the timing belt, water pump, and thermostat ASAP. Unless you have records that it was already done. Those are key part replacements at 80-90,000 mile increments for vehicles with t-belts. When I bought my '89 Pathy (VG30) with 124K on it, that was the first thing I did. 161,000K as of today. Still running smooth/strong. Also, minor replacements of the plugs, wires, distributor cap & rotor, and ofcourse an oil change & filter. Air filter too. Should be good to go then. Preventive maintenance.

In addition to what 89Joe said (which is all great advice), change the coolant as well. Coolant is the most often overlooked maintenance area, and it can have damaging results if not taken care of. Nissan recommends it changed at least every 50k and 4 years I think, so that coolant should have been changed a few times by now. If you do the timing belt and water pump, which you should do, the coolant will get changed anyway.
