I've got a 1996 XE 4cyl now with 183,000 miles on it and I'm concerned about a trivial matter. I never see the fuel light come on when I'm running on E. Is it possible that that was an option back in the day or could it just have burned out? It doesn't light up when you start the car either. I've tried stretching a tank out hoping to see it come on but it never does.
My first thought would be don't worry about it. The fuel gauge works, and that's all you need. Secondly, I don't think my '95 has a light either, so maybe the Hardbody trucks didn't have it. Either way, I think it's useless. I fill up at 1/4 tank and would never see a light anyway.
You do have a low fuel light. These lights only come on when the fuel level is really low. You have to be down to a gallon and a half of gas. On my truck, the gas gauge can read E and that light will not come on. That gauge has to be distinctly below the E level for the light to come on.
The light does not come on when you turn on the ignition switch.
