The problem: My 88' Pathfinder will not produce a spark.
We thought the problem was in the ignition coil, since we were getting a decent amount of voltage to the input (low voltage side) of the coil, but nothing from the high voltage side when we tried grounding it (while turning over the ignition)... We replaced the coil, and it is the same story.
The coil-to-distributor wire is fine; there is continuity.
Are we missing something here? If there is an input voltage to the coil, I would think there should be enough output from it to produce at least a bit of arcing...
After changing the solenoid, & the cap & rotor in this truck, it would be nice to get it running again.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Did you check the ignition module? I'm not sure where it's located but, if you take it off and take it to Advance Auto Parts, they will test it for free. If it's bad, expect to pay anywhere from $20 to $200+ for it. I haven't had to buy one for a Nissan yet so maybe someone else here can give you an idea of what it costs and where it's located. Good luck!
Make sure you are getting the right amount of input voltage with a voltmeter. Also clean the mounting bolt holes where the coil screws down since that is where the coil grounds out at.

Thanks Warped - we were not sure what the small black object was that was wired directly before the ignition coil - we will pull that out, and have it tested at either an auto parts store or the local Nissan dealership.

Thanks NissanJunkie - we were not sure if the mounting holes provided the ground for the coil. We were using a loose-fitting stainless bolt connected by a wire to the negative battery terminal (just in case)... next time I try out the coil, I will ensure there are new screws grounding the coil directly to the truck body.
I will update this thread with the results within a couple of days - if there are any more opinions out there, please feel free to provide them! This is all new territory for me...
