I haven't had this 98 Pathfinder SE long and I'm finding that the clutch is slipping when it's hot. When I bought it the big selling point was that the tranny was just rebuilt by the local dealership. The previous owner also had a brain-dead mechanic work on the clutch first.
The symptoms are just as I said. When the engine is hot by either city driving or long idle times, the clutch slips. It hasn't yet slipped when it's cold or at highway speeds. I noticed the heat shield around the hydrolic line so Nissan noticed something.
Is it possible that the clutch can slip when it's hot if the wrong fluid was used? Perhaps the brain-dead mechanic used the wrong fluid.
No, wrong fluid wouldn't cause that... if he used DOT3, then that should be OK.
I imagine it could slip when it's hot, but long highway driving wouldn't heat it up because it's in full contact with the flywheel... no friction is being created.
How old is the clutch? It could just be worn out.

"Working on it" isn't replacing it...... so I'd suspect the clutch or the pressure plate as your problem. Most shops don't replace clutches when they rebuild transmissions and from what I know around here no one rebuilds manual transmissions because its not cost effective when you can get one rebuilt for $800 or a remanufactured one for $1,000. Its just my .02 but I think you may have been bamboozled!
A PA Nissan dealership did the work in April and installed a clutch kit for the 96 pathfinder SE. I checked at my local NY dealership and they ran the part numbers to my VIN. Apparently a change was made mid year to that model - the throw-out bearing changed. Since the work was done within 12 months by a dealership, they are replacing the part for free.
No wonder I like Nissan
Makes me want to go out and buy a NISMO hat or something.

Yeah that's the service you get when you get on the Nissan train! I just wish other people would get to know the value of these vehicles rather than blow them off as a foreign made imports, when they are made in Tennessee.
