Hi there,

I am hoping someone can help me with some advice. I have a 97 pickup 5 spd 4 cyl. I do all of my own maintnance and light repair work. Recently (roughly 2 months ago) I noticed that at stop with the engine in neutral the rpm dropped to about 500 and there was a slight ringing sound coming from the engine. As soon as I touched the gas pedal the rpm went back to normal and did not fall again. It has done this about ten or fifteen times in the period since. I replced the spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor and fuel filter. The alternator checks out fine. The service engine soon light has come on and I am worried that I may have to give up and take it in to the shop. Can anyone give me some advice as to what I can do? The truck was bought new by me and only has 75k miles. I appreciate any help ya'll can give.

First things first, find an Autozone and get the check engine code read. This could be the answer to your problem right threre.
