1999 Frontier Audio Upgrade-Fosgate System

I am going to upgrade the audio system in my 1999 Frontier SE King Cab. It has the 5 speaker system (sub box on rear wall). Does anyone have any experience with this. I have contemplated starting with replacing the door speakers and powering them with a new amp while retaining the old head unit and sub.

How is the sub integrated into the current system? And how do I access it? Is their a good alternative that would mount in its place?

Thanks

I considered a bunch of different options in my 03 which is identical to your set up except has more wattage. The stereo is set up to where the front components run off the front channels. I know they redesigned that subbox on the back for 02 but i'm not sure if yours is quite the same. Mine has two tweeters on the side of the box with the 6" sub facing forward. if yours is that way than each tweeter runs off it's own rear channel and the sub is bridged off of both the left and right rear channels. All the speakers are already amped behind the dash.

I was going to take the box off all together, relocate the tweeters and replace the carpet on the back wall with a single sheet. but that seemed to difficult and time consuming. what I did instead was simply just added a Fosgate Punch HE-2 10" in a custom box that I built (a generic will work well also as long as the air volume is correct for the speaker) that sits in the driver side well and fires downward. It is powered by a Fosgate 900w Mono amp and is bridged off the feed into the factory sub. I can't tell you how great this sounds as everyone things i've replaced everything and can't believe it when they see the factory head unit. Modulated the bass gets tedious at times since it isn't on it's on sub channel but that's okay. with the sub I usually have the bass on the lower half of the range and once you take the bass out of the factory speakers they really sound good. and since I left the factory box in the back with the tweeters and then the component's up front it really creates a nice soundstage. it's just awesome having a loud, clear stereo for our tailgating and so fourth. I have pictures if and I'll see if I can post them on a reply. Hope this helps. be careful wiring though because if you have the premium set-up that also has the radio controls on the steering wheel the harness's are all jacked up. Took me forever to figure out what was what (there are 3 seperate harnesses)

later,

Are there any online manuals or documentation on replacing the Deck and Door speakers?

I have a 2000 Frontier with factory everything and am considering replacing the audio and running everything myself.

Should I buy one of those Service Manuals you can find at a PepBoys or shoudl It be easy enough to figure out?

it just takes time... for me it took alot of patience and a voltage tester because like I said the radio had 3 harnesses and they weren't set up like you would think! if you have the premium (rockford fosgate) system with the sub and/or steering wheel radio controls it would just be easier and much better sounding to get a nice head unit with 3 sets of preouts run one 4 channel amp to new speakers and then a sub and amp off the designated sub pre-outs. this is the best way to do if you have to start over and it doesn't take much money, $250 or so to get a nice head unit with 3 pre-outs.
