Question Firing order 96 XE

My Haynes manual has me confused or I have been running with my plug wires crossed for several years.

I pulled the distibutor to gain better access to the AC compressor and think the shaft may have turned while I had it out. Simple solution for me was to reset everything at TDC (the manual says 10 degrees BTDC) and line up the #1 cylinder with the #1 point on the distributor. Any easier suggestions are welcomed.

Well the manual puts the #1 spot on the distibutor in the wrong place in relation to my wiring. (I didn't remove any of the plug wires when working on the AC compressor).

Firing order in the manual is 1 3 4 2; Cylinders are in seq 1-4 front (Fan) to rear (tranny). The picture that shows the distibutor is a circle with four smaller circles inside. 1 each at 2 o'clock, 4 o'clock, 8 o'clock and 10 o'clock. And it shows the point at 2 o'clock as the #1 cylinder plug wire. And the rotation is shown to be counterclockwise making the 10 o'clock position the #3 cylinder and the 8 o'clock position the #4 cylinderr and last at 4 o'clock is the #2 cylinder.

My setup (which has been the same for years has the #1 cylinder going to the 10 o'clock position.

So what's up? Have I been wired wrong for years? Or is Haynes misleading me?

I'm a visual learner, so if you have URL's with some photos that would be great.

Thanks

Well, if its not to late, how about labeling the wires. Also, you could be out of phase 90 or 180 degrees, with respect with the manual's diagram. I have chiltons, and nissans own. Both show same, 1 at 2o, 2 at4o, 3 at 10o, and 4 at 8o. Additionally, I am interested in how you determined what 12 o'clock was on your actual distributor.

The wires are labeled, but that would not necessarily solve my problem.

Anyway - I am looking into the engine bay from the roadside.
