I am wondering what kind of gas mileage I should be getting. I am only getting about 240 miles to a tank, about 15-18 mpg. When I bought it the idle was rough and engine light came on after first week. It also failed emissions. Took it back to where I got it and they replaced O2 sensor and cleared codes. Idle is better but engine light came back on a week later. I found an emissions receipt from the previous owner and it barely passed and was giving a code for intake air temp sensor. I just replaced the sensor and still no difference. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanx
I'm getting around 23 mpg with 2.4L 4X4 (not a king cab). I have 127K miles on it. My mileage goes down to about 21/22 if someone else is in the truck with me or if I get real heavy on the gas.

You have the exact same truck I do and are getting the exact same mileage I am. I've finally decided part of my problem is my gear ratio. I'm running a 4.6something gear and turning 3500 RPM on the interstate running 73 MPH.

That is part of the "problem"...but unfortunately, the solution requires more than just a gear change. Mine's got 4.375 gears, and I run just about 3100 on the Interstate at 70 mph. The REAL problem is the engine is way underpowered for the vehicle it's in. It does okay around town, but on the road, you've got to keep the revs up to overcome the overdrive gear. This is why highway mileage isn't that much better than in-town mileage. The VG30E gets even worse mileage.
Be sure to reset the ECU after replacing the intake air temp. sensor... I think disconnecting the battery overnight will do it. If you still have the Check Engine light after that - you have another problem. Mine was getting about 17 before a tune-up with all OEM parts and O2 sensor, intake temp. sensor etc. Now I average in the low 20s with mixed driving - and I'm not exactly gentle with it either...

Tacoma? My son is lucky to get 17/18 mpg on his, I get 22/23 in my Nissan.

I think he was talking about power, and I don't blame him one bit. Fortunately (for Nissan fans), the Frontier is going to come with a much needed engine upgrade in '05 (a VQ40DE).

I have been getting about 18-19.5mpg lately. I am about to install a K&N and see what that does.
that just shows you about being underpowered doesn't make a difference with engine size. I have the vg33e and I get 19 running around town and avg 21 on the highway with an auto. Mine is probably capable of getting around 23 on the highway if 4th wasn't so high. My pulls high 2k range at 75 where my 01 Silverado would be loafing at 1900 rpms at 75. but it got 15-16 in the city since the motor was a full liter bigger.

It also shows the difference between 4x2 and 4x4. A 4x2 Hardbody with the 4-banger will get upwards of 30 mpg by some reports, although I think the EPA rating is something like 26 on the highway.
