'98 Frontier, Engine codes, how to check

Hey all.

Have taken seat out and exposed ECU, but the unit has no knobs or lites. Is this year suppose to? 4 cylinder king cab short bed, Service engine soon lite is on steady, and did not go out after I disconnected the battery for 30 minutes. Truck runs ruff and has poor gas milage. ANy help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

I have 97, had the same problem. There is a small screw on the side of the ecu that you turn clockwise, or something like that, anyway after doing all that, I finally had a neighbor with a computor testor. he plugged it in and came up with some fault codes, anyway, the rought running happened at cruise speeds or when I wasn't excelling or decelling, I would hold the throttle steady and the engine would miss,. anyway among the many fault codes one had ssomething to do with the E.G.R( exhaust gas recirculator)
I then unplugged the vacume hose to the EGR and the miss went away. After one trip to work and back the check engine light came back on but the engine did not miss. I am, however, still getting poor gas mileage and low power.

Thanks, I saw a service bulletin about the EGR value on the Nissan-Tech site. They gave the same discription you did only took it a step further and said the manifold had to come out to clean the carbon out of the tubes leading to the EGR valve.

Anyway I think I was looking under the wrong seat for the ECU. I was looking under the drivers seat which would probally explain why I could not find the screw.

Doh!!!

Well I disconnected the battery overnite. No service engine lite. Went and filled up with super and put a bottle of Techtron in the tank, and the truck is running much better, the ruff running is gone and the lite has not come back on.
