Hi all,
I have a question.
the other day i was driving about 60 on a highway and all of a sudden my check engine light comes on. then i get to a speed zone where the speed limit goes down to 50, so i do and then it turns off, then the speed limit goes back UP to 60MPH so i do, and it goes back on. then i turn off to take my boyfriend home (35 MPH road) and it turns off. i get back onto the highway to take myself home and it turns back on..WTF!?!
so.
my question is. why is it turning on and off. could there be something wrong w/ my catalytic converter or my exhaust or could it be something else.
OR where can i get the codes tested and about how much SHOULD it cost me to get them checked!?!
help please b/c i have to drive about 40 miles to school every day and i don't really want to while my check engine light keeps coming on!
EDIT: i have a 95 pickup.
most mechanics charge a small fee to read the CEL. call some local shops and ask them. my mechanic usually does it for free but thats because ive known him for years.

is my question just stupid or what? please i need help, i've searched on the forum and can't find anything..help
Your post is not stupid, but there's lots of sensors and items on the truck that could cause a 'check engine' light to come on. My advice is go have the code checked, and post back with the results if you'd like. Perhaps then, somebody can give you a direct answer for the problem.
The last and only time mine ever came on, I pulled into a shop, the guy read it for free, I knew what it was right away and fixed it right when I got home.
Good luck
Go to AutoZone -- they'll read the codes for free for you. They'll tell you what the codes are, and probably try to sell you a bunch of stuff, but I wouldn't buy anything yet. Consult with a mechanic (or us!) and then decide what to do.
But she's got a 95 pickup, don't you need the 96+ OBDII connector for Autozone to read the codes? I know a few of the <96 vehicles had OBDII but I didn't think the Nissan trucks did.
Also have you done a quick search for retrieving the codes via the diagnostic screw on your computer?

Yeah, Nissan trucks started OBD-II in 1996 model year. I didn't know AutoZone ONLY tested OBD-II vehicles. They don't specify in their advertising -- they just say bring it in and we'll check the codes for you. If they only test OBD-II vehicles, then yeah, they won't be able to help you. My mistake.
Maybe that will help a bit.
PS my truck is still running perfect, with the light on...it goes back to the shop again on Saturday so they can try actually earning the $210, haha.
yeah i read that. i need to get it to auto zone or something, haven't found the time to do so. it didn't come on all day monday, then it came on again last night, so i don't know what's goin' on? might take it to the zone tonight though.thanks. when i find out what it is i'll post the codes that they found. if they can help, if not i'll take it to the other mechanic that i took my truck to before i bought it
to reply to the above post that i posted a while ago...i have not found anywhere around here that will check these codes for me. starting to piss me off

same here, I have a 1995 pickup and Autozone cannot check mine either, he told me 96 and above....I had to do it myself by following the instructions in the 'sticky' post above.
It's not that hard except trying to get under the seat to turn the screw and see the blinking light. I found out what my problem was, I actually have 2 codes flashing, so it at least gives me a direction to start working.
Anyway, try the directions above or get somebody to try it for you, remove your seat if you have to (your ECM is under the seat on the passenger's side if you have a bench seat like mine..I did not remove the seat and it was a pain getting to it.) Hopefully you have only one code flashing so it will narrow it down a little.
good luck -
