hey i was wondering if any one out there could help me. i recently purchased an 89 nisan SEv6 n ive been fixin up some problems but theres a few i need help with. after having the truck tuned and smogged the engine light would come on then go out n repeat for a while till things fiannally settled. i was drivin home yesterday when i noticed the emergancy break ligh on the dash was on. i pulled over n double checked to make sure the lever was all the way down. pulled it all the way up n then down still nuthing. when i got home i pulled the center console out n checked the lead at the bottom of the lever and as that moved the light got slightly dimmer but never went out. any help would be much apreciated. thanx in advance
You do know that the brake light is for more then just the parking brake, that it also signals trouble with the braking system, right? Could be air in the brakes, maybe even a fluid leak. Do the brakes work preoprly?

My first guess would be the parking brake switch, which is probably near the lever somewhere. My dad-in-law's Tacoma does this every now and then...the BRAKE light would light up every now and then and you have to slam the lever all the back a few times.
In general, the BRAKE light indicates either that the parking brake is activated (or that the switch is reporting it anyway, even if it isn't) or that there is a low brake fluid level condition. These are the only two causes for the light to come on, according to Nissan. The system has no way to detect other brake problems, like a sticking caliper or having air in the system or anything like that...and certainly not back in 1989. If the fluid level is full or close to it, I'd concentrate my efforts on that switch, especially since you said you could wiggle it and make the light dimmer? Clean the contacts on the switch and check the resistance across the switch in both the open and closed positions.
thanx for the help. i ran out n checked everything. the break fluid is at the full level, and ive noticed no problem breaking during normal driving. i slammed the lever back a few times n the light still came on. i took out the center console and checked the switch. i pulled the wire off n the light still remained on. i pressed the button all the way down and the light would only dim but wont go out.
