Rough Idle

Hey gang,

I've got a 96 Hardbody XE with the 4cyl engine. The check engine light came on yesterday. I had autozone check the computer and they said that two things came up.

1. Throttle Position Sensor bad
2. Cylinder 4 is missing.

I replaced the TPS and that fixed the idle that was going up and down.
I changed the plugs, wires and distributor but it still has a rough idle. I'm assuming that means cylinder 4 is missing? Autozone said that normally when a cylinder is missing, a general tune up will fix it.

Any ideas??

Stephen

I would recommend that you only use Nissan OEM parts for your plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, and plugs. We've heard a lot of stories about things getting worse after a tune up with aftermarket parts. I've heard that a bad TPS will cause a high idle.

Is your check engine light still on?

Heath

I unhooked my battery for a couple hours and the check engline light went away. It has not come back yet.

The Idle seems to be stable now, since I replaced the TPS,about 750 RPM I would guess. It just seems to shake the cab a bit much....

thanks,
Stephen
