Unhappy 96 hard body 2.4 iradic idle when cold, ck light on

I have a 96 hard body 2.4l 5 speed singlecab 2WD with a cold start iradic idle. Just rolled 100,000 on it have had it 3 years and bought it with 60,000. Starts fine and the idle bounces from 400-1400 rpm. Once it is running for a couple minites it seems to straighten out and I have no problems as long as it has been run within a couple of hours. Check engine light has come on and had it checked at auto zone code is P0505: Idle Control System Malfunction.
Any ideas of what steps to take next.
This is one work horse of a pickup and has many jobs from haullin yard work to camping & hunting. Hope to hve it mended soon

Thanks Chuck

It might be your throttle position sensor? I had the same thing on my 97 4WD. Ran about $200 with labor at a Nissan dealer.

I had the same problem yesterday with my 96 hardbody. I changed the Throttle Position Sensor and its back to normal. 42 bucks at Autozone.

Try checking your Idle Air Control motor. My roommates car did that exact same thing. That fixed it right up.

Now my check engine light came back on a couple days later with a new code. The same as yours. P0505 Idle Control System Malfunction.

The idle is rough. I bought some Throttle body cleaner and will try to check the vacuum hoses. I've never done this so we'll see how it goes.

A P0505 code on these is a failure of the Idle Air Control Valve (IACV). The coil should read about 10 ohms, and the plunger should move freely.
