1997 Pathfinder service engine light prob

Bought this Pathfinder with 75k and now has 165k. The service engine light has been intermittant on/off since we bought it. Nissan service dept said emission repair (no details) $500. The light would come on any time offbrand gas was used, and will go off when major brand(shell, exxon, chevron) is used. I was told by service dept that the computer memory gets cleared out when the light goes out and so cannot trouble shoot unless the light is on. I expected the memory to hold the most recent faults as other cpu systems do. Gas mileage has dropped from 22mpg to 15 recently. What can I do find the source of this problem. Any help appreciated.

The time you had it in to Nissan and they quoted emissions repairs did they have an actual code at that time? Does it come on often enough you could swing by Autozone to have it checked? Also your PCM has a diagnostic mode selector screw that you can flash the error codes on your dash anytime it comes back, might be easier to catch it when it comes on in that case.

I have a 97 SE with 111k miles on it. I recently had a drop in gas mileage(from 20 to 15), my mechanic replaced the plugs, fuel filter and did a fuel injector flush, that seemed to help a lot. He said that there was a lot of crap(carbon build up?) that came out with the flush. I hanven't had any check lights come on, but that might help with the fuel economy.

I had a fuel economy problem on my truck (down to about 17 or 16 with a 2.4L) that improved by replacing the front O2 sensor. I was up to 22MPG on the last tank but probably average 20-21 overall now. This was at about 105K, and the old sensors checked fine, even in the ECU test where you count the number of lean/rich flips. I did a complete tune-up first with new OEM plugs, dist. cap and rotor, plug wires, fuel filter, etc... but still had the low MPG until I replaced the O2 sensor.

I bought mine from www.sparkplugs.com - it was the Denso OE Equivalent and came with the correct harness and wire length. I assume yours is the V6? If so you'll probably have four sensors, two fronts and two rears. I'd try repacing the fronts first and see what happens. If you want to go with OEM you can get a good deal with www.everythingnissan.com - best to call them at 1-888-216-5328 and ask for Joe. I wouldn't recommend going the cut and splice route with aftermarket sensors...

Good luck!

Did your Check Engine light come on or did you have any trouble codes to show that they were bad? My '97 2wd has pretty poor mileage. After a full tune-up, the only thing left that I can think of is the O2 sensors, but they're not showing any codes.

Didn't have codes or a check engine light. The old one even checked OK with the ECU test mode where you can count the number of lean/rich flips - but it definately made a difference. I've heard the same story from my parts guy who had a 1996 2.4L truck, and it's very common on the Infiniti J30 as well.

If you didn't use OEM spark plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor, I'd think about replacing them again... Nissans are very picky about aftermarket parts for some reason.

Disconnect the battery for about 5 minutes and that should reset your computer. I'd also look into some new spark plugs. I just recently got my 97 Pathfinder XE (4x4) and after changing the plugs went from 15 mpg to 21 mpg. It makes a big difference at the pump.

Good luck.

I don't know if you have gotten this issue resolved but I thought I would let you know that I have had the same issue for about a year and I finally got the right codes and the right issue diagnosed with mine. I was told it is the Evap Vent Control Valve and O Ring that need to be replaced. I spoke to someone else regarding this and they said your best bet is to replace the canister as well otherwise you may have fitting issues. Check out my recent posts regarding the Evap Vent Control Valve/O Ring!

The error codes that my diagnostic gave were Code PO446 and PO440 (from the dealer).

Hope you have gotten things resolved...if not...hope this helps!

If the error was resolved the light will go out by itself, if you clear it disconnecting the battery without resolving the error it will come back in the next several days/weeks depending on when the drive cycles are met.
