I seem to be having a very similar problem. Let me know what you come up with and I'll do the same.

Chris.

I too have the same problem except on a 95 pickup with 2.4L 4 cyl and 5spd trans. When truck is idling (stop light) the engine races and I have to touch the gas pedal for it to run down to idle. I'm thinking that in might be the PCV valve but not sure.

Going from lean to rich? O2 sensor would be my guess. Maybe an intermittent vac leak? 1987 was 17 years ago. Could be anything.... 1995 sounds like a malfunctioning idle air control, or a sticky throttle plate. Dive in and let us know what ya find.

buy a cheap vacuum gauge (harbor freight) to indicate possible vacuum leak.
