Problem: When the RPM is between 1000 and 1300, I hear this loud resonance in the cabin. The sound is there whether the car is moving or not. I don't hear the sound when I am standing outside or when I put my ear close to the muffler. When I am in the cabin, it almost sound like being in one of those Honda-Civic-rice-mobile with the souped-up mufflers, except not that loud. Any suggestion as to what may be causing the noise? I don't think it's the heat shield, and I can't see any hole in the exhaust.
my 2003 just went into the shop for that except it was resonating at higher rpms... it turned out to be the catalytic converter coming apart! after they replaced it... it was all good!

I am surprised that the cat would go out so fast. I have a 2000 Frontier. By the way, how much did the cat cost you?

I have a similar sound, when I start my truck first thing in the morning on cold mornings, or when I get out of work on a cold day (when the engine is on fast idle). I'll let it set there for about a minute before I start driving, and there's a loud boomy resonance, like a direct mix between a car with a trash can muffler and a car with big subs vibrating the body panels in the next lane (how annoying). I think it's just a function of the extra fuel at cold idle and faster engine idle speed because if I rev it, the noise goes away and quiets down. If I start driving, it doesn't sound like that. After it warms up, it doesn't sound like that. Just when I start it cold and let it fast idle to warm up a bit.

What year/engine/trans/4X4 or 4X2? Some more detail about your truck would be helpful in helping us to help you with your problem. For example: I have a 1998 Frontier King Cab 4X2 5 spd with 210,000 miles.

I am going to take the truck to the dealer and let 'em look at it. I read in Chilton manual that dealers may be required to fix the Cat because of some federal mandate. I hope this means I won't have to pay for a replacement, if the cat is indeed the problem.

I'm new to this forum. Just bought (one month ago) a 2002 frontier XE,4X4 (V6). I also have noticed a resonance in the cabin at stop lights when the vehicle is in gear at idle. The noise is somewhat annoying. Just wondering if you ever found out the cause. I stopped at my Nissan dealer, and he said this is normal..!?.
I have a 2001 Frontier 4x2 x-cab 4cyl 5 speed with 59,000 miles.
everytime i shift gears, I get that same sound. Also when the truck is at idle. When going down the road, no noise, just when I shift (any gear, upon pressing the clutch). It seems to be from 1000 to 2500 RPM on mine.

Hey check my post "Hey Frontier owners." I have the same issue with mine and they said it was a air flow sensor not sending the right signals... we'll see if it helps
