my engine light came on about two weeks ago then is went off 2 days ago. can any one tell me why it went back off?

The code is intermittent. It should still be stored in the ECU's memory, so I would have it read by Autozone or your local shop .

yea go to autozone and they have a scan tool to clear the ECU codes

It went off because the computer will assume the problem has been "corrected" if it doesn't see that problem again after a specified duration or number of drive cycles. If the light is out, the code is probably still in the computer stored as a history code.
