2002 is the last year that you will find a Pathfinder equipped with a manual transmission. They churn out 250 hp (vs 240 with the automatic), but have a lower torque rating: 240 ft-lb vs 265 ft-lb with an auto. Apparently, Nissan had to lower the torque rating, as well as the tow rating (3500 vs 5000) due to durability issues with the tranny. Also, don't expect Honda-slick shifting as this is a Nissan truck (i.e. long throws and no special synchros). Those niggling issues aside, the shifts are smooth and direct, and clutch take-up is superb.
I purchased my '02 SE 4x4 in late 2002 and, by then, it was one of the last manual units left in California. I used the Nissan website and checked all (read: ALL) dealer inventory...I had lots of time back then.

Although, depending on where you are, Nissans sold in Canada may still come equipped with manual transmission for '03 and '04. Maybe even Hawaii???
Needless to say, I'm very happy with the vehicle. On the flip side though, there are days when I don't feel like rowing through the gears. Boredom is sometimes good.
P.S.
TO FELLOW PATHY OWNERS - I recently replaced my factory tires (Toyo Tranpaths - ick!) with the Michelins Cross Terrains. These tires are indeed quiet and have excellent wet/dry traction. I will be heading up the mountains next month, so I will let you know how they do. I'm putting good money that they're much better than the Tranpaths since I was all over the place even on 4H. One caveat though, the ride is a tad harsher than before (even at 33 psi), but I got used to it in a couple of weeks.
Hope this helped!
