My ’96 with the 5-speed gearbox is great. The shifting is slow, you really can’t slap shift it, but it works great. I replaced my original clutch at 120,000 miles. I tow a ski boat a lot and the lining was still good, but my release bearing was starting to growl. Thus I have a new clutch, pressure plate, pilot and release bearings along with a resurfaced flywheel.

2002 is the last year that you will find a Pathfinder equipped with a manual transmission. They churn out 250 hp (vs 240 with the automatic), but have a lower torque rating: 240 ft-lb vs 265 ft-lb with an auto. Apparently, Nissan had to lower the torque rating, as well as the tow rating (3500 vs 5000) due to durability issues with the tranny. Also, don't expect Honda-slick shifting as this is a Nissan truck (i.e. long throws and no special synchros). Those niggling issues aside, the shifts are smooth and direct, and clutch take-up is superb.

I purchased my '02 SE 4x4 in late 2002 and, by then, it was one of the last manual units left in California. I used the Nissan website and checked all (read: ALL) dealer inventory...I had lots of time back then. Although, depending on where you are, Nissans sold in Canada may still come equipped with manual transmission for '03 and '04. Maybe even Hawaii???

Needless to say, I'm very happy with the vehicle. On the flip side though, there are days when I don't feel like rowing through the gears. Boredom is sometimes good.

P.S.
TO FELLOW PATHY OWNERS - I recently replaced my factory tires (Toyo Tranpaths - ick!) with the Michelins Cross Terrains. These tires are indeed quiet and have excellent wet/dry traction. I will be heading up the mountains next month, so I will let you know how they do. I'm putting good money that they're much better than the Tranpaths since I was all over the place even on 4H. One caveat though, the ride is a tad harsher than before (even at 33 psi), but I got used to it in a couple of weeks.

Hope this helped!

I have to admit that I didn't check out the Yokes since I once had a lousy experience with the brand. I was noticing incessant vibrations from the steering wheel and tried curing it with numerous wheel balancing and alignment. Eventually, a local shop determined that the front tires had flat spots on them. I am sure this problem is uncommon, but it's hard for me not to consider what happened then.

Before I purchased the Cross Terrains, I was also considering the LTX's. Jason (jadcock) and I had a fairly long discussion on that. I also heard that the new Bridgestone Duelers with Revo are popular among SUV owners.

I got mine at America's Tire Co (a.k.a. Discount Tire) and was told that these Michelins are excellent for onroad driving and are fairly competitive in mud and snow. Obviously, you would want a much more aggressive tread pattern if you want to go off-roading. And that I'm sure many of the folks here will gladly give you their $0.02.

When you get the chance, let me (and the forum) know which tires you end up getting and what you think of them.
