question about lowering a hardbody

okay, right now i'm trying to choose between 2 nissan hardbodies. here the specs:

Truck #1:
1996, white, automatic, 4WD, aprox. 50k miles, aprox. price is $4800

Truck #2:
1997, black, automatic, 2WD, aprox. 65k miles, aprox. price is $4850

i am planning on lowering my truck quite a bit. i was leaning more towards the 4WD truck but then i read somewhere that you can only drop a 4WD truck about 2" or so. my question is, is it true that 4WD trucks aren't good candidates for lowering and should i go with the 2WD?

My question is, why would you even want to lower a four wheel drive? If you want to lower the truck my advice would be to get the 2 wheel drive.

I'm not really sure, somebody else may know, but I can tell you this. Out of all the NISSAN trucks I have looked at at cardomain.com I have never seen a 4X4 MINI TRUCK!

go with the 2 wd if you are looking to go that low. it should be a little bit easier to do. my guess would be you cant do the 4 wd as easily becuase of the angles that will be created on the front drive spindles in the front suspension when its lowered.

and another advantage of 4wd is the added performance it can bring to a car or truck. not just offroad cabability.

the thing about lowering a 4wd truck about 2" is correct. dont remember exactly why, i would have to get out some of my old mags but i think it has something to do with the transfer case or something in that neck of the woods. hope this helps

NOt to mention the 4x4 HB have a 1 1/2 inch body lift from the factory so that would make it harder to go to low, without a body drop.

I had a 94 chevy s-10 4x4 and I lowered it quite a bit
had to drop it with air bags and a bridge in the rear then after that i did a body drop
but i tried to run in 4 high when it was sitting on the ground and I dunno what it was the angle or somthing I ate up myt front diff not right away but after a few months so if you do that use some good airbags and then make sure you lift her back up before runnin 4x mode

The 4x4 models are also spring-over in the back, which means the leaf spring pack sits on TOP of the axle. Adds ground clearance that way. The 2wd vehicles are spring-under from the factory, which means the springs ride underneath the axle. When you think about it, this pulls the axle closer up to the body (with similar springs). Set the truck back on the ground and the body will be closer to the ground that way. Good point also about the "body lift". The body does sit higher off the frame on a 4x4 truck vs. a 2wd model.

the spring over thing is an easy fix tho
ford makes a flip kit because they have the same thing on there rangers
I never tried it but I assume they will work also they need to be weilded(sp) on the axel

but then again if he would do a body drop and flip kit then he can do a stock 2x4 height at best (I think)
I know it was a job geting my chevy down as low as i did nad it was in the weeds but in retrospec I dont realy think it was worth it I think it would be better to just get a 2x4 and worry about engine mods

If you plan on lowering your truck there are many ways of doing it. They way you want to lower you truck will depend on how low you want to be. You can easily lower your truck 2-3 inches with blocks and drop spindles... If you plan on going any lower you will want to look into air bags or getting a body drop (which can be more expensive)...

Check out NissanMinis.com for more information about different ways to lower your truck...

P.S. You can lower a 4x4 but you wouldn't want to be in the snow, unless you have air bags... If you read MiniTruckin Magazine, the yellow Frontier they lowered a few months ago was a 4x4...
