Question 1990 Pathfinder - good buy?

There is a 1990 pathfinder for sale nearby for $600 (neg). It has 140k, which the owner said runs great and leaks no oil. The tranny is completely shot, and won't move. The interionr is fine, the exterior some rust (who cares, it's a truck). Is this worth the $? Also, I will have to bring it to a shop for the tranny- never done one. It would be a lot better in the snow than my sentra. Opinions?

at 140K the engine should be good for a long time to come. i would price out the tranny repair add that cost to the price of the truck and compare it to blue book and see where you come out. might give you better idea of if its a good deal or not.

if its a auto tranny add a tranny cooler to it, early pathys have serious tranny cooling issues, add a larger(rv) cooler if possible

Ask the owner if the timing belt has been changed recently, or at all. If he or she doesn't know, you need to plan on doing that job also. I'd say that given the current known issues (the tranny and the rust), and possibly the timing belt too (which can really leave you up a creek), I'd pass, unless you're really looking for a true beater to run around the farm with. With any other unknown issues, you may never get that truck running right.
