Pictures: 2005 Pathfinder and Frontier

The first official pictures of these 2 vehicles are now available. I like the front end but I am a little confused. The rear of the 2005 Pathy looks similar to current Xterra and 2005 Fronty has the same front end as the 2005 Pathy. This plays tricks on my mind because before today the Fronty looked like the Xterra and Pathy had no similarities with the either Xterra or Fronty.

In any case, these vehicles look good so far. I don't the specs yet, but I am sure 2005 get more power and other cool new features.

You can find the pics here:

Latest Specs.

I found the specs. The following article is a Copyright of www.nissannews.com The new 4.0 V6 sounds nice! And independent double-wishbone suspension at all 4 corners - nice!

Nissan Debuts All-New 2005 Frontier Pickup, Pathfinder SUV and Nissan Actic
Concept at NAIAS

Detroit (Jan. 5, 2004) - Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) today unveiled the all-new class redefining 2005 Frontier compact truck and the all-new 2005 Pathfinder sport utility vehicle (SUV) at a press conference at the 2004 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. Both vehicles are scheduled to go on sale late this year as 2005 models. Also making its debut at NAIAS was the Nissan Actic concept vehicle, a dramatic “content rich” small crossover sport utility vehicle design exercise.

“We’re keeping the new product introductions coming in 2004 and the unveiling of three all-new vehicles here in Detroit gets us started on the right foot,” said Mark McNabb, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. “The all-new 2005 Frontier and Pathfinder are ready to raise the bar in their segments once again and the Nissan Actic is a concept car that truly propels design and technology to a whole new level."

2005 Nissan Frontier

Following the recently introduced Nissan Titan full-size pickup, the all-new, larger, more powerful Nissan Frontier is poised to lead the way in the compact truck market.

The third generation Frontier, which is offered in both King Cab and Crew Cab body configurations, shares a number of significant features with the award-winning Titan, including its innovative spray-in bedliner and Utili-track™ bed channel tie-down system, rugged truck styling and fully boxed, all-steel frame based on the Titan “F-Alpha” platform.
Like Titan, the new Frontier is designed to deliver exceptional levels of acceleration, handling and braking, towing capacity and off-road capability. The Frontier features a newly designed 4.0-liter DOHC V6 rated at 250-plus horsepower and 270-plus lb-ft of torque and a choice of 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive with advanced off-road technology. The new engine is part of the acclaimed Nissan VQ engine series utilized in the Nissan 350Z, Maxima, Altima, Murano and Quest. A base King Cab model with an inline 4-cylinder engine also will be available.

The 2005 Frontier, like the previous generations, will be assembled at Nissan's award winning manufacturing facility in Smyrna, Tennessee. The Frontier King Cab and Frontier Crew Cab are scheduled to go on sale at Nissan dealers nationwide in winter 2004.

2005 Pathfinder

The all-new 2005 Nissan Pathfinder returns to its roots as a powerful, authentic family adventure-enhancing sport utility vehicle (SUV) with a larger interior, three-row seating, a new 4.0-liter V6 and an all-new platform based on the “F-Alpha” platform utilized on the full-size Pathfinder Armada and full-size Titan pickup.

The 2005 Pathfinder features independent double-wishbone front and rear suspension, standard 4.0-liter engine rated at 250-plus horsepower and 270-plus lb-ft of torque, and a standard 5-speed automatic transmission. Pathfinder is available as a 4x2, or 4x4 with an advanced off-road traction system.

The addition of a standard 3rd row seat gives the new Pathfinder 7-passenger seating, along with outstanding passenger/cargo flexibility. The split fold-down 2nd and 3rd row seats can be folded down individually, combining with the fold-down front passenger seat to provide 64 different seating/cargo configurations.

Advanced safety technology features include Zone Body Construction, Nissan's Advanced Air Bag System (AABS), and available roof-mounted supplemental curtain air bags for side impact and rollover protection to outboard passengers in all three rows.

The new Pathfinder will be assembled at Nissan's manufacturing facility in Smyrna, Tennessee. It is scheduled to go on sale at Nissan dealers nationwide in fall 2004.

Nissan Actic Concept Vehicle

The Nissan Actic is a "content rich" design exercise created by Nissan Design America, Inc. (NDA) in La Jolla, Calif. It combines a simple, confident exterior form with flexible, modular seating and a unique “digital canvas” interior.

Actic makes a visionary statement from Nissan about how vehicle owners will approach technology in the future. In place of traditional content-heavy vehicle control systems that become outdated immediately, Actic's handheld "key fob"-based Information Technology (IT) system allows the user to “grow” the interface with infinite flexibility and updateability. Actic provides nearly unlimited opportunities for its users to explore and challenge the relationship between exterior and interior environments and to introduce elements of personalization by projecting video displays on a series of six roof-mounted flat LCD screens.

Other Actic innovations include dual sliding side doors, a "cross trainer"-style wheel and tire design (patent pending) with tread-wrapped 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, and a versatile, matching trailer with inflatable walls that converts to a comfortable sleeping space for three.

I'd have to see the vehicles up close, but to me it just about seems they've destroyed those two models by making them a tad too much like their larger bretheren. I liked the old styling of the Frontier, and although all vehicles must be updated at some point, that Frontier looks too... Titanish. Too big, too chunky... too "thick".

And that Pathfinder... it no longer looks like a Pathfinder. Rather, like a 7/8th size Armada.

Actually, the Frontier looks like a Toyota truck with the Titan's front end.

I'd have to see the vehicles up close, as I said, and take a look at the dimentions, but they seem rather large...

I'm glad to see they're finally going to give the Frontier a real engine. I always keep my eyes out on the horizon for something that might possibly replace my 182k mile Hardbody, and I've gotta say, Toyota really has Nissan beat in the truck world with their powertrains...save for the recent VQ35DE in the Pathfinder. That engine competes directly with Toyota's nice DOHC 3.4L V6 (and kicks its butt in power and torque ratings), but it wasn't available in the Frontier. The S/C was just a band aid in my opinion to cover the miserly performance of the VG33E; and the S/C returned even worse gas mileage, and did it using premium fuel. No offense meant towards the S/C folks; I'm sure that engine is leaps and bounds ahead of the N/A V6, but it still just barely competes with Toyota's mule.

Kudos to Nissan for designing in the VQ series engine into the next generation Frontier! I couldn't load the pics (problem with my server here I think), but I'm eager to check them out.

Methinks that this engine might also make its way into the Titan, as I do believe Nissan wanted to expand the options for the Titan in the years after its launch, perhaps a smaller engine is one of them?

And I think that reverse could be true as well. Armada's V8 (or some modification of it) finding its way to Pathfinder LE. There are a few rumors that the 2005 Pathy has enough room under the hood for the V8. This really needs to happen if they really want to compete with the 4Runner and other mid-sizers. By the way, Toyota's 4.0 V6 (in the 4Runner) makes a little more torque and a little less HP than Nissans new 4.0. But torque is still what matters more.

Talking about torque... Nissan needs to quickly finalize the deals and make a Diesel option available for Titan/Armada. And maybe even a smaller Diesel for the Frontier and Pathfinder.

nissannews.com posted more specs...

2005 Pathy:
Length = 187.6 = 5in longer than current (about 1in smaller than 4Runner).
Width = 72.8 = 1in wider than current (about 1in smaller than 4Runner).
WheelBase = 112.2 = 6in longer than current (about 2.5in bigger than 4Runner).

2005 Fronty (king cab):
Length = 205.5 = 2.5in longer than current.
Width = 72.8 = 1.5in wider than current.
WheelBase = 125.9 = 10in longer than current.

The wheelbases got the biggest stretch. That's good for leg room, but not that great for sorta serious offroading.

they both look like smaller version of the Armada and the Titan. not sure if i like that trend or not. i dont think the grille works as well on the smaller scale of the path and front. but as was said before i need to see them in person.

they both do seem to look a lot larger in size. and as 2fast has found, it seems to be that way for sure. which i personally dont agree with. i dont think everything should be getting so much bigger. thats one of the reasons i love my pathfinder. its big enough i can haul what i need but not so big that it feels like a waste of space when its empty. i can only hope that they dont make the xterra larger as well.

I think the new frontier looks bitchin! kind makes me wish I waited another year to get mine! I bet that thing will haul with that 4.0 v6.. and the choice of a 6spd manual or 5spd auto! definitely is unmistakable as a little brother to the titan, which I think is a good thing....

as for the comment on the pathfinders being along side the frontier... back in the days before the Xterra the pathfinder was just a hardbody SUV and then when the pathfinder was redesigned to a unibody frame and the frontier was separated, then the Xterra came about. Even in today's pathfinders and frontiers there is a strong resemblance! (doors and interior). it makes me wonder though... since the Pathfinder and Frontier are brought closer together again with this new "mini-titan" platform, where does that leave the xterra?

Later,

Good question. I'd LOVE to see Nissan keep the Xterra just as it is now -- a small SUV, with great off-road capability, and keep building a loyal following. There seems to be a "cult" of Xterra owners, as ferrociously serious about off-roading as many Jeep clubs are. I don't think it'd upset anyone if the Xterra remained almost a purpose-built 4x4 adventurous outdoor-friendly escapemobile, just like it has been since its inception in 2000.

From the comments, there seems to be a love-hate thing going on with Nissan's new styling. Being a very conservative person myself, even the 98-04 Frontier's styling was pretty far-out for my tastes. I prefer the tasteful lines of the Hardbody to the "faddish" styling of Nissan's new trucks, which will look out of date every other year as the trends change. I think Nissan should reflect on the success they had with the Hardbody -- a full 11 model year run! -- and maybe scale back on the trendiness with the new truck styling.

I'm still really happy to see them use a VQ-something in the new trucks. That's been a long time coming in my humble opinion.

My like my 2000 and hate the newer ones because they took all of the nice looking chrome pieces out, black bumpers and dull wheels, looks cheap. I don't like my 3.3 liter VG. I do like the new frontier for having bright chrome again and bright wheels. The engine is the best thing, 4.0 liters and dual cams, Love it. 250 hp can be pushed to 300+ easy. We could take the stillen supercharger and bolt it right on!!!!!! Dual exhaust kits from Nismo!!
