Need some help with oils!

Didnt get an owners manual with this truck. Can anyone tell me what kind and weight of oil I need for my truck. 97 XE 4x4. I need to replace the differential oil and the tranny oil. Also give me an idea of how much I will need. Thanks

You'll need some 75W-90 GL-5 for the differentials. The rear axle (if you have the H233B) takes about three quarts and the front about 1.5.

The transmission takes GL-4 ONLY...and you'll need about 5.5 quarts of 75W-90 to refill it.

The transfer case takes about 2.5 quarts of Dexron III (automatic transmission fluid) if I recall correctly. Someone please confirm this (ATF for the t-case) for me.

The ’96 Pathfinder XE uses Dexron III for the transfer case.

I thought GL-4 was only for a manual transmission, DexronIII for an automatic. Also GL-5 in conventional will be 80w90, synthetic will be 75w90. Best bet is to go to Nissan's website and you can download your owner's manual for free. www.nissanusa.com and setup your vehicle under Owning/My Nissan.

I had ATF in the case and after 2 or 3 wheeling trips it was almost black....I went to a very thin gear oil and havent had a problem.

Redline in the tranny
Valvoline in the diffs.

Very true. But an automatic wasn't available with 4x4 to my knowledge in '97 (esp. on an XE model) so I was operating under the assumption that it was a stick. Thanks for the tips on the weight differences between synthetic and regular. Indeed, I only found 80W-90 in conventional oil when I changed the oil in my diffs.

Most of those lubes are pretty east to find. The trickiest of the bunch is the 75W90 GL-4. Your best bet is probably Red Line Oil MT-90. You can get this from myoilshop.com and other places.
