Hey there guys..I am thinking of doing a "minor" performance mod to my 2001 Pathfinder SE (Low $$ just to make it "better" than stock). Keep in mind that I am 32 years old with 2 kids at home so I am not looking for anything wild. Just something to bolt on and go. I looked at the K&N 's as a possibility to improve throttle response then I saw some guys who installed the Stillen Intake.
What are the benefits/drawabacks of each?
I live in Canada and we have VERY cold winters here. Any problem with the Stillen Intakes in Cold Weather?
I also Snowmobile all winter so I tow 2 snowmobiles with a trailer (total 2500 Lbs.). Any problem there??
Any information on either mod would be much appreciated.
What ever you can afford. The CAI intakes are a little noisy, the K&N's are slightly quieter and the tradeoff is more power and washable filter media. You could add some cool points and say VINTAGE snowmobiles!!! Check out my website www.angelfire.com/extreme4/skidoolympique

I installed a K & N filter on my '03 pathfinder and noticed no appreciable difference in performance. I did however pick up a little gas mileage increase.
I was contemplating the CAI system but noticed that the airbox had an intake opening through the fender. This opening connected to a resonator box (not sure if thats what its called) Its supposed to lower noise and catch water before it gets to the air box. I removed the resonator (you get to it through the fender well) and connected a length of ducting (the kind used for clothes dryer venting) and ran it to the vent near next to the fog light. This creates a cold air intake while still utilizing the stock airbox. I'm not sure how this compares to HP increase that you'd get from a real CAI but it does make some difference in performance for a fraction of the price. I have driven in in total flooding rain storm and the water never reached the airbox.
Next step, exhaust system. Supposedly neither the CAI or the exhaust boosts performace greatly without the other, they work well when modified together.
That's true. The vehicle was designed from the factory as a package. Claims of 20 hp just by throwing in a low-filtration filter like a K&N don't happen without other items with it. If you want to get more air in, you also have to let it out. Borla and Edelbrock both make great mufflers, but they're expensive. I've had experience with both, and would recommend either brand without hesitation. We had a Borla on a Grand Cherokee and set that Jeep up on rocks and 24" logs numerous times...and there were dents and dings all over that muffler (and everything else under the body), but since it's stainless steel, it never rusted because of the gouges and it never punctured. Great product!
