2001 Path SE Man. Transmission Question

Great forum.

Just purchased 2001 Path SE w/manual trans. and 32K miles. Since purchase, I have noticed a rumbling noise difficult to track down. Nissan said things were normal. However, after checking web sites on subject, I tried this test: engine on, parking brake set, stick neutral, clutch pedal .. depressed (no noise), release (annoying rumbling sound). Many web sites indicate this to be the sign of an input shaft bearing failure .. transmission problem. However, having not owned one of these cars before (Maxima only), I don't know what to think.

Is this sound normal in a Pathfinder. Frankly, it's a bit annoying even while driving, particularly when coasting (eventually quiets down).

Any advice, assistance appreciated.

It does not sound like an input shaft to me. Just changed my throw out bearing and clutch though last month.

Are you still under warranty??

The car is still under warranty. Nissan dealer did not report finding any problem after car was in for inspection/check.

The noise just seems out of place given the rave reviews the 01 Pathfinder's received. Also, I don't recall any manual transmission I've had that was this apparent (Porsche, MazdaRx, Ford Exp, Maxima ..). I did find a number of sites that mentioned Jeeps (particularly older models) suffering from this mild-disposal running type sound when in neutral or coasting.

But, maybe that's just normal for the car.

SOME noise is normal from the throwout(TO) bearing, but not a lot.Does it stop immediately when the TO bearing hits the clutch , or does it take a second or two to stop after depressing the clutch? If it takes time, it is the input shaft bearing coming to a stop.If it switches on and off immediately, it is the TO bearing and this is normal. P.S. My 98 4 cyl Frontier has ahd this noise since it had 135k miles on it and has yet to experience a problem with 205,000 on it now, so I wouldn't worry about it unless it is almost out of warranty. However, just to be safe, have the gear lube changed and inspect the drain plug immediately after it is taken out. If it has a lot of metal on it, there is a real problem and Nissan should make it right(P.S. Mine had huge chunks on it when I changed it, so I attribute the noise to loose clearences inside). Change to a synthetic gear lube like Mobil 1, Royal Purple or Redline. It's more expensive, but worth it in the long run. I changed mine at 150k and it shifted smoother and made less noise.

Thank you. I'll run the car this morning with those check items in mind. I noted last night (you hate listening to your car this much) when coming off the power and gliding to a stop ... you depress the clutch pedal and the racket from something is clearly heard (marbles rolling). After a few seconds, it stops. It's the kind of thing even passengers note.

I do appreciate all these notes. I'll return to dealer soon to test on a non-rainy day (easier to hear). I just know there are lots of manual trans. out there and if everyone tells me this is normal for a Pathfinder .. so be it.

Thanks again.

The transmission whine remains pretty noticeable in all gears .. particularly noteworthy is the sound you hear when descending a hill and then depress the clutch .. you can hear it in all its glory. It does fade away as transmission windes down.

One added note .. earlier Pathfinders with R30A manual transmissions were the subject of a Nissan TSB for the same thing (whine in neutral with clutch pedal depressed and in all gears except 4th).

Anyone know if the manual transmission in a 2001 Path is an R30A variety?

I'll be checking out with dealer but any advance notice would be good to have.

I think I really just need to find another 01/02 manual and see if there is the same transmission whine.
