Just got a 92 Pathfinder 3.0 4X4 SE a few weeks ago from a local used car dealer (private dealer, not Nissan). Love the truck, as it's everything I expected.
Problem is that it didn't have the Owners manual for it. I asked the sales dude if it was shift on the fly 4X4, but he wasn't sure. He advised me that to shift into 4X4 mode, I'll need to stop...put into neutral...shift into 4X4 high, then shift back to drive. This works fine..but I really like to know if this is necessary, or can I shift as I'm driving along?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, or if anyone knows where i can get an owner's manual for a 92 Pathfinder that would be awesome!
If you have automatic hubs (and I think you probably do), you should be able to shift into 4x4 "on the fly", although I would slow down to do it (like to below 25 mph) and drive straight while you shift into 4H. The owner's manual for my '95 Hardbody says that if equipped with automatic hubs, you should slow down to 25 mph or less...I assume you'll have the same type of automatic hubs and should follow the same precautions.
If you have manual hubs, you should be able to shift "on the fly" as long as they're in the LOCKED position. If they're in the UNLOCKED position, your front drivetrain will not be turning and when you try to shift, it may break the transfer case. And you obviously don't get any front traction in 4x4 anyway, if your front hubs are unlocked, but I thought I'd make mention of it anyway.

The 4wd instructions are printed on the drivers sunvisor. Ebay also has lots of owners manuals for some strange reason.
If you register with nissandriven.com (USA website) you can download a free owners manual.

Yup, I've got a '93 and my manual has the same instructions. I generally slow down to below 20mph to be really safe.
As an aside to this, I have a somewhat related question.
The manual says (I have manual locks) to drive with the hubs locked at least 10 miles each month to keep everything lubricated. Sounds reasonable. But it also says to never drive in 4x4 with the hubs unlocked. My question is why? Either way (locked/2wd or unlocked/4wd), all the parts get lubricated. The only difference is where the "open circuit" is in the drivetrain. If you lock the hubs and keep it in 2wd, the "open" is at the transfer case, because it's unlocked. If you drive in 4wd and don't lock your hubs, the "open" is at the hubs, because they're unlocked.
The only reasoning I see behind Nissan's warning to never drive in 4wd with the hubs unlocked is because they don't want folks getting in the practice of switching in/out of 4wd with unlocked hubs because if they do it at speed, they'll grenade the transfer case. Other than that, I see no mechanical reason why I couldn't just shift into 4Hi once in a while (while stopped) to keep everything up front lubricated if I don't hit the trails often that month. Anyone else agree?

thanks for the reply,
The sunvisor doesn't have any instructions, and @ nissandriven.com will only photocopy a manual and mail it to me for $25 USD. I'll keep hunting around the bonewards too...mat be I'll get lucky.
The 4x4 XE models (4-cylinder) came with manual locking hubs (yay). The SE-V6 models got auto hubs (in the mid '90s anyway). Not sure on the XE-V6 models...if auto hubs were optional, standard, or even available at all.
You can even get manual hubs on a current year X-terra with the "Enthusiast Package" I understand? I hear it comes with LSD, manual hubs, and some other trail goodies.
