i got a 02 path se 4x4 and i get bout 13-15 city adn 15-20 highway dependin on my drivin habits. i put the tornado in and i seen a 1-2 mile increase and a slight power increase. not happy wit the gas milage but i love the car.
holy cow that's horrible gas mileage for a mid-size SUV. My frontier v6 auto gets about 17-18 running around town and 20-21 on the highway. I know that the highway mileage could be better since nissan suv's and trucks turn the highest rpm's i've ever seen at cruising 70mph compared to everything else (2800 rpm vs 1800 rpms in my 01 Silverado) but the people i've known with pathfinders have always been relatively pleased with intown mileage!

For a 2002 the expected mpg for an automatic is 15/18. My 97 Pathfinder averages 16.8 City and 19.6 Highway, hoping that goes up with new Warn hubs I put on last weekend. The 99.5 and higher years went to the 3.5 engine and I've heard many get better gas mileage than rated especially with the swap to manual hubs. One downside is the premium fuel the newer pathys require.
The older WD21 Pathys are known for bad gas mileage. It's usually the number gripe on other boards. I would just resist temptation to always floor it and just take it easy. My brothers F-250 gets better mileage than I do. When I was stock I was around 16/19. Now I'm quite a bit less than that...but it's well worth it...if it's not been used as a daily driver.

When I first got my pathfinder I was averaging 14-16 city and 18-20 freeway. Just last week I put in new ngk blue wires, ngk iridium ix plugs, new bosch cap and yec rotor, and a new bosch fuel filter(the old one was never changed). My freeway mileage jumped up to about 22 mpg. I was actually thinking of getting the tornado just to try it out but I decided to use my money on a tune-up instead, which has shown to help a lot. I got a great deal at importrp.com. Came out to less than 130 for everything shipped. I recommend clamping the fuel lines when you change your fuel filter. I tried clearing the lines by pulling the fuel pump fuse and running the car until it died out but it still managed to leak continuously as I changed the filter. It gets hard with only two hands..especially when you're under the car on your back. Oh...and for the plugs...that one in the back by the firewall was a bit tricky to get to. I did it from the driver side fender while standing on a little foot stool. It took a little feeling around, but once you find that little notch to put the socket in, it's easy to do afterward. Hope this helps someone who wants to improve their mileage.

I just bought my 2003 Pathfinder SE 4WD last month it only has 1,000 miles. I am only getting about 8-10 mpg. I just filled up the tank with 89 Octane and am driving it "nicely" to get a better read. I really hope it gets better. Also what is this Tornado that everyone keeps talking about. I am not looking to modify anything for the first 6 months.
The tornado is a piece of sheetmetal that you install in the intake stream that allegedly puts the intake air into a "vortex" for more power. Even if it does create a vortex (it probably does, by swirling the air and really blocking the airflow) in your intake tube, that air is affected by your MAF, by your throttle body, and by your intake manifold. Any vortex it created is LONG GONE by the time the air actually reaches your fuel injectors for fuel atomization. Talk to any engineer (besides the "engineers" at the Tornado plant) and they'll say it's bunk. Any positive differences you may perceive in the operation of your vehicle are either from the placebo effect, or other environmental and situational variables. Keep the money and spend it elsewhere...really.
On the gas mileage issue, that sounds pretty low -- I'd take it back to the dealership after the break-in period if it doesn't improve, and I doubt it will. Your mileage may improve a bit, but don't expect much. The VQ35DE engine should be getting much better mileage than that.
I have an '02 SE 4x4 with a 5 speed manual, and I average about 16/18 just as the window sticker specified. My daily commute involves both city and highway...with a little more time spent on the highway. Driving habits definitely play a major role on your mileage return. When work gets stressful and I get punchy with the throttle, I get about 16 mpg!
Also, your freeway speed impacts your mileage. The faster you drive (i.e. the harder your engine works) the lower the return. I hope this helped somehow.

I own a '92 XE V6 w/ 95K miles, averaging 20 mpg. I am looking at an '02 and wondering what kind of mileage to expect.

Project pathfinder gets 16-17 mpg in the city and 23-24 mpg on the highway. It gets 20 mpg towing the SE-R cup car.
The engine mods really helped the mileage.

JWT tested a Tornado on a 3.5 Altima and it lost 16 WHP. Its a piece of crap.
