mass air flow sensor

Hello all,

I have been searching what is wrong with my truck, I think that I have found it. It is the mass air flow sensor. Now I have a few qustions.

1. In the 1994 Nissan pick up 4cyl, how big is this thing? If I am right, it is basically a plug that is attached to the bottom of the airfilter assmbly.

2. My test was, when the car was warm, (when I noticed the problem) the idle would start acting weird, and at times acting like it wanted to stall. What if I drive with it disconnected?

3. Is the "mass air flow sensor" just a different name for the "air flow meter"?

4. I have tried to find this part, no one has it, I have called up some junk yards, and it is only listed as part of the throttle body assembly... why?

5. Where can I find one besides dealer only, the dealer wants $470 for it!!!!

Thanks for the help guys!!!

The plug hanging out the bottom of the air filter housing is the air temp sensor. The "maf" sensor is a couple of tiny wires inside a small, about 3/8 inch bore, beside the throttle body throat. The tiny wires have little bumps in the middle. I just sprayed some carb cleaner down the bore to clean the sensor. Don't poke anything down the bore or you are likely to cause even more problems.

You would save yourself some time, money, and headaches by buying yourself a Haynes or Chilton's manual. You might also try https://www.alldatadiy.com/index.html

What are the symptoms of a bad air temp sensor?

I broke the small wire in mine a couple of years ago. Like the man said, DON'T POKE ANYTHING DOWN IN THERE. Well, I did. I went to the dealer like you and it was like $500 or something, you have to buy the whole throttle body assembly. So. I went down to my local import wrecking yard and bought the whole throttle body assembly for $35. Moral of the story, go to the junk yard. You can get what you want and more for pennies. I installed the part I needed off the throttle body and the truck has been running fine since. And, I have an entire spare throttle body if I ever need any parts off of it. Good Luck. LL

I'd use brake parts cleaner for the MAF. It leaves no residue - never had any problems on the Qs or the Truck. Just make sure the truck is off and the keys are out of the ignition!

My 280zx has been having some issues with the throttle. It idles funny and won't rev. I changed the fuel filter, spark plugs, and distributor cap. It still has the same problem. Could I also have an air flow meter problem?

Is it fuel-injected? I thought all the 280s were carbureted. It sounds like you have carburetor problems to me. Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensors are only found on fuel-injected vehicles, and I ~think~ only the multiport ones at that (not the throttle body ones). I could be wrong on that though.

I have a used one for a 95, 4cyl., 5 speed. $100.00 plus shipping. Make sure you check the intake manifold gasket first. Let the truck warm up, and then spray carb cleaner directly along the mating areas of the intake to the head. If the idle changes while you are spraying the carb cleaner, it is a bad intake gasket, not the MAF sensor.

My 280zx is a 1980 non turbo model, and has a air flow meter. I popped open the electronics to the air flow meter after taking it out and saw that everything was functioning correctly. Is there something that I'm missing? Could it be my air flow meter still, or a fuel problem?

Changed: Fuel Filter, Distrubutor Cap, Spark Plugs.
