Output shaft dust cover removal

I'm working on a 1995 Hardbody, 4x4, V6, manual. The seals on both the output shafts coming out of the transfer case are leaking, the rear significantly worse than the front. Drained the fluid and removed the driveshaft (rear), then tried to pry out the seal. It's way too hard to get to with the big dust cover connected, but I'm not sure how to remove it.

My Haynes manual doesn't mention how to remove it at all. From the illustrations, it looks like it should just slide off if pryed, but my initial prying didn't budge it. Before I really lean into it and destroy it, is there a snap ring or something hidden away that I need to take off first? If pryed, it should just slide off the end?

This was supposed to be a quick and easy drop the shafts, change the seals job. Nothing ever seems to work as planned.

Mine just slid off. It's a very, very tight fit. After years of grime/dirt and whatever else makes its way in there, makes it near impossible to get off.

If you can get two short pry bars or screwdrivers one on each side, should be able to wiggle it enough to get it started. All you need to do is 'break' that initial grime. You've probably noticed the 'seam' line - just work a screw driver around and around.

It was a serious pain, but a half hour of strain and effort later, it flew off, so you're on the money. Thanks a lot.
