New Speakers

Does anyone have any recommendations for replacement speakers for the stock locations (this is a '95 King Cab)? I briefly looked in Crutchfield (Internet and catalog) and nothing appeared to fit easily. Are there adapters available? I heard once that if you really want to install non-stock speakers in the rear, they extend out too much and cause you to not be able to raise or lower the rear seats.

I'd like some decent replacement speakers, hopefully for the front and rear, but I guess I'll have to see what people say about rear speakers. What have you all done, on a budget?

Thanks,

I have a 1995 Regular Cab Hardbody 4X4, but I think the same deal would apply to your truck. I took my stock door speakers out and replaced them with SONY XPLOD Speakers. They are size 6 1/2' and the max input power is 200 W. The exact speaker number is XS-V1632. I cannt remember how much I paid for them? Maybe $50 to $75 something like that. For the rear someone gave me a subwoofer with tweeters and I put the behind the seat. With a new cdplayer too, compared to the stock sound system is sounds AWESOME! However, if you just want speakers alone they put out a lot of bass, treble, or whatever you like! Click the links below for pictures of them installed on my truck.

That's one of my future projects... the factory speakers sound terrible! I was thinking of using something new in the front, and then a small sub-woofer (maybe a tube?) under the seat. I'm not looking to rattle the doors and wake up small children strapped into their car seats in the Tahoe next to me, just good full sound. I'd even like to keep the factory H/U (well it was factory in a 2001) if possible.

Seth, yes, I saw those in Crutchfield and they look like quality speakers. Did you have to make any modifications or drill any new holes to mount them?

Does your truck have rear speakers stock? Mine has two rear speakers, but I think at least one of them is blown. I understand you need to have a separate amplifier to run a subwoofer -- is that the case? How is yours run...do you have your sub wired straight from the head unit?

Thanks,

I had to drill new holes to mount it, but it was no big deal at all. Quick and simple process. No my truck does not have stock rear speakers, but the cdplayer I put in my truck has a connection for rear speakers so I ran some wires under the carpet and hooked the sub and tweeters up to that. Between the sub and the speakers in the front it's loud enough to give you a real good headache, but man it sounds great!

Great, thanks. What model CD player do you have installed? Do you know the total watts and watts RMS?

BTW, great looking truck! What size tires are those, and do you have a lift in the front (cranked torsion bars?)?. Great looking truck.

The cd player I have is a SONY XPLOD CDX-L600X. It is 52WX4

Thanks for the compliments on my truck. No lift in the front or anything! Thats how it was when I got the truck! The tires I have on there now are 255/70/15's. I really want to get 31X10.50's, but I'm just not sure how its gonna fit on that 15 X 6 wheel!

Thanks for the model number on the CD player. The speaks you have are now discontinued (at least through Crutchfield), but they have others that are very similar (for $99). I'm eyeing a pair of Panasonics and a pair of Pioneers (both for $79). I'll let you know what I end up with. It probably won't be soon, but I always like to start looking at options way before I plan to buy anything.

255/70/15? That seems like a good size -- can you do me a huge favor? Can you measure the rolling radius of those tires, as they're mounted on your truck? This would be the distance between the very center of the hub to the ground. I have 30x9.50 tires and the rolling radius is much different than half the nominal diameter. 31x10.50s do fit on these rims -- I've seen them before, and they look great. I'm looking around for a new tire size to replace my current 30" tires when they wear out -- probably sometime next summer. I'm thinking about 31x10.50, 255/70/15, 265/70/15, etc. Or, I may stay with 30x9.50. Who knows.

Thanks,

This afternoon, I took the speakers out of my truck, just to see what I got and verify the speaker sizes.

The fronts on mine are 4" speakers, as best as I can tell, but the mounting holes (4 of them) are on about a 4.75" circle. The cut-out diameter is slightly UNDER 4 inches. I don't know how they measure speakers...anyone know for sure? The categories on Crutchfield were 4" and 5-1/4" -- nothing in between. This speaker doesn't seem to be either of those, but it's closest to 4". They're made by Clarion and appear to be quite pitiful. Max power is 25W and "NOM." (for nominal, or watts RMS I assume) is 8W. PA...THETIC. All that information was conveniently stamped on the bottom of the magnet.

The rear speakers' mounting hole diameters were right at 6", with a speaker cut-out of closer to 5". They didn't have any supporting information stamped on them, but I assume they're equally as weak as the fronts. Clarion-made too I would guess. Again with these, I'm not sure what size to pursue -- 6-1/4" speakers would seem to be a tad too large to mount. And 5-1/4" speakers would require a custom adapter made to fit my truck's larger (than 5-1/4") mounting surface.

Both speakers appeared to be 1-way designs...without a separate woofer or tweeter, so I know I can do better with just about ANY 2-way speaker out there. I can't believe BOTH the front and back appear to be an obscure size... Can anyone confirm or explain how speakers are measured -- do you measure the mounting circle's diameter, and list that as the speaker diameter?

Also, one final question -- when they list the wattage of a stereo (like 50Wx4), does that mean there's a maximum capacity of 50W for EACH channel? So a 50Wx4 receiver might be listed as a "200W" receiver? Reason I ask is that my radio in the truck, according to the sales brochure, is a 50W max stereo. That means I have a maximum capacity of about 12.5W per channel?

Thanks again,

You can get much better prices from www.discountjungle.net.

I have cerwin vega 6.5" s in my doors and they rub the tint. Before them I had sony 6.5"s (xplod predecessors) they were okay, but not as good IMO. I recently put cerwin vegas 6.75" and 6x8s in an altima and was dissappointed. Imaging was great but the base was lacking. I also run a pioneer spare tire sub behind my seat(reg cab) with nothing but a high frequency filter $15. This combined with my poineer head units bass filter sounds pretty good.

I pulled some kenwood 5,25s out a xcab nissan. They really don't have anything down low though. But for $20 i SAId why not.

You can get spacers for the doors. I made some for mine out of 1/2" sheet plastic.

I run 6X9s in my wifes sunfire rear deck blau's with dual voice coil. There great but I don't think they would like sealed box.

Good luck

Thanks for the jungle link. Their prices are incredible. I'm gonna order from them when I make my purchase!

I have real good experience with Pioneer speakers. I had four Pioneers behind a stock Delco stereo (in an '84 Cutlass) and folks thought I had a subwoofer, the bass was so good and deep. You obviously couldn't crank it real loud, but at reasonable volumes, the rear view mirror would vibrate with the bass. I think a major factor there, though, was the impedance. I believe the stock speakers were 10-ohm (can't remember exactly), and the Pioneers were 4-ohm, so I was getting a lot more efficiency just by changing the speakers. I was half disappointed to find the stock Nissan speakers were already 4-ohm...meaning I can't get a lot of efficiency gains by going aftermarket -- but I certainly believe I can get better quality in the aftermarket. I think I'm going to go with Pioneers again, provided I can find some with good specs and a decent price.

I'd have to really cut out some material to fit 6.5s in my front doors. The hole in the door panel backing board was barely big enough to slide these out. I had to remove some material just to slide the stock Clarions out. I think I'm going to order 4" speakers for the front and make adapter plates out of plexiglass or other thin material if I need to. Same goes for the rears -- I can't really squeeze bigger speakers in there, so I think all the popular 6.5s are out of the question. I might go with 5.25s with some adapter plates. I'm looking for speakers with the lowest frequency response (in the 30 Hz range for the rear ones for instance) to get the best bass I can get without using a sub. I'm not expecting to rattle windows without an auxilliary sub, but I want to make sure I get the speakers that will match my preferences best.

Where were the 5.25s that you took from a King Cab? Were they in the front or rear? What were they mounted to...factory location or did they make some mounting adapters?

Jadcock do not put 4" speakers in the door. You will have NO bass. The doors overall are a good tight box provided the windows are up. You can get 6.5" in there. Take the inner door skin off. First take the screws out of the arm rest. Then there is a small clip holding the window crank on. Press the door material back as far as you can and look down vertically on the "crank" shaft you'll see the clip holding it on. Get a hook and pull the clip. Remove the handle. Then pop the trim from around the door handle. It snaps on over the outer edges of the handle. Its annoying the first time. Just be careful to not break it. Then pull the inner door skin free from the door begining at the far outside lower corner. Get you fingers between the backer board and the metal and give a quick jerk. THe plastic thingys should pop free one at a time. The ones that stay in the door just put them back on the backer before you install. The whole process should take less than 5 minutes. When you get that free you'll see you have room for the 5.25" easy. I'm running 6.5" with no spacer right now and no cutting. I only had to break some of the backer away to make room. I installed my speakers over the backer. with long self tapping screws. I have to run now I have more to add.

Well, you may have talked me into some larger speaks...at least 5.25" for the front. I look forward to the rest of your tale.

The only issue you will have with 6.5"s is depth. I have cerwin vega's and they sound pretty good. They rubbed the tint off though. If you don't have tint your fine. If I had put a 1/4" spacer they would have been fine. One more thing there is a plastic dust sheet behind the backer. Be sure and leave it in tact. You don't won't a nasty interior.

Check the link 6.5's listed for your 95. Just cut the backer to fit. I didn't even cut mine. just pushed it away.

http://elliottelectronics.com/Oemspkrmain.htm#Nissan

I put 5.25 in my wifes doors and they were weak. Always get the biggest speaker you can get. If you don't have a sub of some type. She had lousy 4X6s in there before. I just cut a piece of plywood, caulked and screwed it to the door.

Ha I found it. Something like this would solve the depth issue.

Cool, thanks. I don't think I even have an issue with depth -- I've found some 6.5s that I'd like to use in the back...and might try them for the front as well.

Pioneer TS-A1670R. http://www.discountjungle.net./pits63sp.html

- $80/pair at Crutchfield
- $39.49/pair at Discountjungle.net

- 3/8" PET silver film dome tweeter
- 1-5/8" balanced dome Pearl PolyCarbon midrange
- Aramid fiber reinforced IMPP woofer with rubber surround
- Frequency response: 30-28k Hz
- 2-35 watts RMS
- Peak power: 180 watts
- Top mount depth: 1-3/4"

I'm very confident these will fit in the rear, and I'm pretty sure they'll fit in the front too, based on what you're saying. I'm going to hook 'em to the stock headunit for now. Possibly an aftermarket CD player will come (maybe for Christmas or something). One last thing: where can I get the wiring harness adapters for the Nissan speaker wiring? Crutchfield likes to advertise that they come free from them...I doubt that's the same from Discountjungle. Should I plan to make my own, or are they available from a local stereo shop? I didn't see any wiring adapters mentioned at Discountjungle.

Thanks again.
