Need help with thermostat

I was planning on changing the thermostat on my 95 hardbody today. I took off the housing that the upper radiator hose attaches to on the engine side, but apparently this isn't the thermostat housing since it didn't have a thermostat in it. What is this piece called? There was a black rubber ring gasket in it that broke when I pulled it off; will I need to replace that or will silicone be enough? If I need a new one, what would that part be called?

Is the thermostat housing on the 4 cyl engine where the bottom radiator hose connects to the engine? When I've done thermostats on other cars it's always been on the upper hose.

Thanks for any help,
Richard

Um, the thermostat IS supposed to be in the upper hose. Not all vehicles have outlet-side thermostats, but most do, including 1995 era Nissans. The rubber gasket ring that broke may or may not come with the new thermostat gasket. When you pickup the new thermostat (and I would recommend a genuine Nissan part), check to see if it comes with a new gasket...which is the rubber ring that broke on yours.

Sounds like your truck doesn't have a thermostat. Just curious -- why are you going to "replace" it? Irregular cooling system performance?

'Scuse me -- looks like what I just said isn't correct. I checked the Haynes manual and it showed the thermostat in the upper hose in one diagram -- but then showed a KA24E picture and the thermostat is in the LOWER hose. The hose connects to a cover over the thermostat that looks like it's held on by three bolts. It appears that the thermostat is under THIS cover.

So it appears that Nissans of this era do use inlet-side thermostats....which probably accounts for the low temperature setting (170 I think).

Thanks for the help. I replaced the thermostat and it is in the lower hose on my ka24e. I just used silicone in place of the rubber gasket that broke in the housing where the upper hose connects to the engine, and it seems to be fine.
