Z24i cutting out above 2200 RPM
Hey All
Hope someone can help me with this.
I have an 89 Hardbody, 4x4, with a TBI Z24i and 5 speed manual.
It's developed a really annoying problem. The engine completely cuts out above about 2200 rpm.
It bucks a little at low rpm, and if I BARELY give it any throttle, it will rev up well beyond 2200 rpm. I'm talking barely offidle. However, if you begin to press the pedal more, it will surge and backfire (above say 2200 rpm), and if you give it still more, it completely dies, even if you go to the floor with it. Before 2200 rpm, you can drive it like there's nothing wrong. You can push it to the floor and it responds like it's supposed to. But above that RPM, you give it practically any thrrottle and it just cuts out; It'll just coast (the tach will still give a valid engine RPM reading too. My tach wire goes to the intake coil, not the exhaust coil). The engine completely dies. It doesnt sputter, it doesnt buck, it doesnt backfire, it just completely goes away. If I let off the pedal back to the idle position, it comes back on like when you pop-clutch start something.
What in the world is wrong with this thing? I'm assuming something crucial died, like the air flow meter. But I have no experience with fuel injected stuff - I'm used to things with electronic ignition and carbs. Has anyone ever heard or something like this? I need to use it for work monday and I would greatly appreciate any help or thoughts. Thanks
