Thorley Header, MSD ignition, urethane bushings for compression rod
Greetings,
I have a 87 Hardbody Z24 4x4, 5 speed manual, in which I'm installing a Thorley header. THY 456 Y SD. For those of you who have installed this header into a truck like mine, did you have any clearance problems. So far the EGR tube port didn't line up so I had to weld in a Swagelok fitting for 1/2" OD SS tube. I had to buy a new EGR valve and tap the intake port with a 3/8" NPT and installed a Swagelok male adapter into this so my 1/2" OD SS tube would connect. The O2 sensor port, I didn't check but when screwing in the O2 sensor it dents the fins. But by far the most disconcerting issue is clearance. There is tons of room for the piping to make a quick exit but the header hugs the transmission bell housing too tightly and the header is bound up against the 8 oclock bell housing bolt boss. It will melt if I leave it there. Then the secondary tubing then cuts clear across to the frame rail and only clears by 1/2". I spoke with tech support at Thorley and they are working with me in a fantastic manner. They shipped me another header next day air and I'm going to try the new one. But as I was informed both headers came from the same run I'm not expecting any changes.
So again, any others out there with thorley fitment issues with this specific model?
Also I've read the archives and found some of you advise installing a MSD ignition. I have a 6400 (MSD 6T) from a chevy 350 V8 application I'd like to use here. What exactly do I need to make the connection. Will the 6400 work or do I need a later model MSD? Initially via email they said it cannot be done. Now they tell me to call them tomorrow after I insisted there are 4cyl Naps Z engines on various bulletin boards with their ignition system. Did I fib to them or are you out there? Please chime in.
Also where can I buy urethane compression rod bushings/bumpers. This rod has this nomenclature in the Haynes manual for the ""front to rear axis control"" for the front suspension. It is attached to the lower A arm/control arm for this truck. In other words it takes the shock when the brakes are applied trying to move the wheel rotor backward toward the cab.
Wow NUK! So many replies! You've found yourself a plethora of cogent discourse here haven't you? No doubt you're truly touched by so many magnanimous gestures of samaritan empathy.
Well anyway. I just came in from confirming the replacement Thorley header is welded exactly the same as my first one so this one is a no go as well. I did discover the problem with the O2 sensor. Part of a weld sticks out like a blister interfering with the sensor fins.
After I get the pictures resized and uploaded to imagestation I'll post them.
Take care NUK and good luck with Thorley tech support.
After throwing the ball back into Thorley's tech support end of the court, after having test fit 2 headers with identical fitment problems, they told me the following.
The THY 456 SD will be discontinued due to low demand and no new run of headers will be made. They still have 2-4 articles left in inventory. And
their decision was to let me keep both headers for the full price of one.
I thought about this for a day and something didn't taste right. I called
them back and told them, I wasn't satisfied. Although they did try to
rectify the problem by sending a replacement out next day air, which I
thought btw was pretty cool of them, it didn't render me into a better
condition than I was before because the second unit fit exactly as the
first. I called their warranty statement into the conversation, and so far
their repair/replacement didn't extend any benefit to me thus far.
I gave them a couple of options;
1. Refund at least 50% of the cost of the header and I'll return the second
one.
2. Refund all of the money and take back both, including the one I already
welded the swagelok fitting.
They liked the sound of option 2. I really didn't. I wanted them to either
repair or reduce the price but forgot to ask them if they would repair and
before I knew it we had agreed to send the headers back for a full refund.
I then get on the phone and found out in short order was only Pacesetter
offers a header for this application. They clearly state that some
fabrication may be necessary on their website. I'm already at that stage,
besides I do like Thorley products.
Unbeknowst to them, last night I gave the first header one more try. A
welder and I heated up the cyl 1 and 3 tubes in 3 places and bent the header
into submision, and created the clearance I required. It's not pretty now
so I'm going to send it out to a local ceramic coating shop. Should be back
by next friday. So I will be keeping both headers for the full price of
one. I don't expect any lifetime warranty service as the second header is
already in my possession. I accept the fact it doesn't fit correctly now
but it will and I'll coat it as well. I may sell it, I don't know. I
don't think anyone wants to pay me 250 for a coated header, but one never
knows these things.
It may seem as though my experience with Thorley is a bad one. I'd like to
state the contrary. Sure I wish things had gone to plan with no difficulty.
Life doesn't work that way. They did extend me a great deal of courtesy
by first sending the replacement out next day air, and then accpeted one of
my final options in the interest of making me happy. I can't speculate why
the header was built the way it was. It is still a very high quality
device, so much so I wasn't willing to let it go in the end. I've used
Doug Thorley headers in other applications and will think of them again in
the future.
This image is shows the problem. I'll take some more pics tonight and show
you the post smoke wrench result.
WTF is wrong with this data screen. Why can't you copy a text from another application and paste it here without it getting all F**cked up??? This pizzes me off! Not to mention all the help a person gets on this forum. I ask for urethane bushings, no help. I asked for header fitment, no help. I asked for MSD ignition fitment, no help. Maybe I'm the smartest god damned person on the board cause I keep helping myself. But I bet if I ask about floor mats, bull race gas caps, cupholders, or type R stickers, all the phd's on the board will be killing themselves to answer all at once. Oh yeah and the 48 hour newbie cooling off period? Someone from the BATF runs this board huh? Words are such dangerous commodoties in such difficult times.
NUK
No happy with the vbulletin format, or its hardbody forum quorum.
Now what? No attachment feature like all the other vbulletin boards I use? Gawd! Oh well, then U no get to see my sexy Doug thorley fitment pictures. I could post them from imagestation but they are too small. Oh well goto the AC 4x4 forum and see sexy pics there. I noticed more people read over there than here anyway.
Well NUK, maybe nobody's tried to fit a Thorley header or Chevy truck MSD ignition box to their Nissan. I sure haven't, and I bet most others haven't either. Maybe the one guy who has is on vacation this week, who knows.
What would you rather...every single one of us to post a message of "I don't know" to your thread just so you know we're reading it? Just because you don't get any replies doesn't mean nobody reads it or doesn't care...it just means they have no input, including myself, until now. Or maybe they figure you've already done your homework...which in this case, you haven't. Polyurethane bushings you seek are listed right on the 4x4parts.com website, which has been named here on this forum numerous times as a good online aftermarket parts source for Nissans.

VBulletin uses a text area box that doesn't support formatting. Is this the problem? It also uses a variable width font, which can fool with the spacing. This is fairly standard with web applications, unless they're using a WYSIWYG javascript editor.

Well, you're probably asking for help no one here was able to assist you with. It happens.
The 48 hour wait was introduced primarily to stop people from causing trouble. We were having trouble with people signing up simply to start arguments or to spam the forums. This keeps them away, and gives new users a chance to familiarize themselves with the board first.

If you want to ante up the cash to pay for the increased bandwidth charges we'll be more than happy to offer attachment hosting. As it stands this isn't possible.

I am planning to run Thorleys on my VG30E Pathfinder and I hope I don't run into the problems you are having. My previous experiance with Thorley headers on Toyotas was that they were high quality and fit well.
Its easy to fit a MSD, you use the output of the power transistor to trigger the MSD's white wire. The stock ignition is good so I don't think you are going to find any gains here. Don't run the blaster 2 coil, it sucks compared to the stock one.
Energy Supension makes urethane bushings for your truck. Upeer and lower control arm and leaf spring. Automotive Customizers in Florida makes urethane soft and hard bumpstops.
