I have never repaired a tire myself. But I am getting too many nails in my tires and it is becoming more of a pain to take them in to get repaired. Are those at home tire plugging kits easy to use and are they safe? I imagine mnay of you do this yourselves.
I'd get it patched if at all possible, but the new plugs work fine. I've used the ones from NAPA because there was no patching available at the time and they held for the life of the tire. I always keep a plug kit in case of emergency. Again, I'd opt for the patch if at all possible.
Ye of little faith! I have had limited experience with self repair plug kits, but so far the results have been excellent. They are quick, easy, & inexpensive. I have never had a problem with the 2 different tires I plugged.
In fact, on my current BMW, I am running a plug in what are now my track tires. In addition to some street use, they have made it through 3 track sessions with speeds up to 125, & 1 autoX also. Please note this is generally not advised.
Anyways, the key is that I take great care when making a plug, & I monitor things afterwards. I'm sure that someone could do a poor job & have problems, so luckily for them, there are alternatives.
There are many flavors of tire repairs available, please choose the one that fits you.

I have had some tire plugs last for the life of the tire and some that haven't. That's the problem with plugs, its impossible to predict how long they will last.
I do a lot of offroading and I'm always picking something up in one of my tires. I would say the best way is to take it in and have it fixed. I got my tires at Dunn tire (they do free repair) and I'm getting my money out of them.
