Puzzling switch

I have a 2000 Nissan Frontier.

The fan motor switch has 5 settings 0-1-2-3-4.

Between 0 and 1---I can hear the AC compressor turning on and off----and the dash light push button goes on and off----this is normal.

On settings 1-2-and-3 there is no fan at all----but the AC compressor is working.

At setting 4 the fan comes on full blast---and everything seems to work normally at that setting.

The truck was in a fender bender a few months ago and I recently installed a new sound system.

Other than those 3 settings on the fan motor switch----EVERYTHING else seems to be working just fine.

Is this just a bad switch??? Or is something more sinister going on here???

Thanks for any help------this seems very strange to me.

Blower resister bank or whatever it is called... It is a bunch of resistors mounted somewhere in the heater plenum that provides the voltage drop necessary for reduced fan speeds. Apparently you still have the low resistor but have burned up the med and high speed fan resistors. Setting No 4 is full 12v, no resistor. Look for this, prob above pasenger foot well. Good Luck

Well...if there is no connection at all between the switch and the blower resistors then you gonna get nothing at all...

Sounds like the resistor pack... It's located in the evaporator box (behind the glove compartment. You can try a new one or download the servie manual as a .pdf at www.nissan-techinfo.com for $20 (one day subscription).

The service manual will tell you how to check it out with an ohm meter. If you need a new one call Joe at Infiniti of Scottsdale (they sell Nissan parts too) - 1-888-216-5328. You'll get 25-30% off list.

Are the PDF files at this site the actual service manual files? I needed to get some wiring diagrams, this would be a great alternative to buying the service manuals. Thanks

That's what I've been told. The entire service manual is available as a .pdf file. I wish I had known before buying my service manual!
