I have a 1999 nissan pathfinder and have been hearing a clunk coming from the rear end for sometime now.The clunk happens when i am slowing down and almost at a complete stop.I also hear it sometimes when i am at a complete stop and i let off the brake.I have taken it to a repair shop and at first they said it was the center carrier bearing, which it wasn't.Then they said it could be the back brakes, which it also was not.I would like to know what you think it could be.Thank You.
My father-in-law's Toyota Tacoma has an axle wrap problem when the truck is stopped -- and I think sticky brakes are the culprit. When you're stopped with the brakes on and then you let off of the brakes, the axle really snaps down (rotates) and produces a clunk noise. Stand outside your Pathfinder with someone else driving it to see if they can reproduce the problem -- and see if you can see an external problem (like axle rotation, or maybe a loose or broken shock, etc.). How did the shop rule out the rear brakes?
I have a friend who test drove a Pathfinder back in 1999 or 2000 and mentioned a rear end noise much like you describe in all of the ones he drove. Has this problem developed over time, or has it always been there?
